- Kevin Goldstein, on Dodger prospect Clayton Kershaw:
When the Dodgers took Kershaw in the first round of last month's draft, you just knew he had to be good. Scouting Director Logan White has a remarkable track record when it comes to taking high school arms, and with the seventh overall pick and no prep players off the board, he had his choice from the entire pool of talent. To his credit, Kershaw hasn't disappointed since being that pick, firing five shutout innings on Saturday in the longest stint of his short pro career. That game lowered his ERA to 1.13 in 16 innings, while striking out 21 and walking just one. That lone free pass was issued to the second batter he faced as a pro — he's faced 58 batters since without walking anyone. It's obviously very early, but it's hard to really define just how high the ceiling is of an 18-year-old lefty with a good body, clean mechanics and plus-plus command of a 91-93 mph fastball that can touch 95-96 already.
- There were some questions in this subthread about Curtis Pride's contract status and how he might end up in AAA if, in the end, he needed to be sent down for some reason. (That's pretty unlikely now that the Angels have given up on Kendry Morales for the time being.) Tim Mead told me he gets DFA'd and has to pass through waivers and accept assignment for that to happen.
- A little old, but here's a Yahoo Sports article on Jered Weaver.
- Speaking of, it looks like the ol' SI cover curse may be in full swing. Please, don't let it be so. (Or is that not the cover?)
- Late because I forgot about it yesterday, but Nathan Haynes of the Travs and Craig Brazell of the Suns made the Offensive Player of the Week awards. In Haynes' case, it's the fourth consecutive week that an Arkansas player has been so honored.
- No Angel or Dodger prospect was named Pitcher of the Week.
- Clayton Kershaw made the cut at number ten in this week's Prospect Hot Sheet:
10. Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Dodgers (Rookie-level Gulf Coast League)
In the Team Photo:
The first high school hurler taken in this June's draft, Kershaw is having his way with the GCL. In five appearances the Texan is 1-0, 1.13 with a 21-1 strikeouts-walk ratio in 16 innings.Tommy Mendoza, rhp, Angels (Low Class A Cedar Rapids): After the way he pitched in the California League late last year (10 scoreless innings, 12 strikeouts), it seemed odd that Mendoza got off to a 1-5 start in the Midwest League. But he's won his last seven decisions, including four straight starts, with a 19-2 strikeout-walk ratio in that span.
Dallas McPherson makes the Not-So-Hot Sheet ("no longer technically a prospect and also not getting it done"). - Weekly league notebooks: PCL (Bees, 51's); Texas League (Travs); Southern League (Suns); Cal League (Quakes); Florida State League (Vero Beach Dodgers); Midwest League (Kernels); Sally League (Catfish); Pioneer League (Owlz, Raptors).

Warner Madrigal's very first game as a pitcher! He gets to be a winner despite giving up the tying run, thanks to Matt Sweeney's RBI single in the eighth. And did you know 2B/SS Alex Fonseca has had only three games this year where he didn't get on base? He's walked in all but five games, and has more hits or walks than strikeouts. Someone to keep an eye on, maybe.

What's in the air in the PCL? Crazy high-scorin' games are everywhere! Denny Bautista took most of the beating for the Royals, giving up 11 runs by himself, and only pitching three innings; Bobby Keppel gave up seven. And all this despite three errors by the 51's, one each by Delwyn Young, Andy LaRoche, and James Loney. Every Las Vegas starter got at least one hit, and even reliever Luis E. Gonzalez was allowed to hit for himself — and he got an RBI groundout. Catcher Edwin Bellorin collected five RBIs on the night, including a two-run dinger, the most of any 51; CF Matt Kemp got four. Delwyn Young also had a two-run homer.
