Minor League Scorebook

2006-07-13: Salt Lake 3, Sacramento 6 #
Willits, R: 2-3, 1 BB
Kendrick, H: 1-3, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Kotchman: 0-1, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Eylward: 1-2
McPherson: 0-3, 1 K
Gorneault: 0-2, 1 K
Mathis, J: 1-4
Saunders: 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 2.50 ERA
Jones: (L, 4-5) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.62 ERA
A quality start by Joe Saunders, erased by the three-run dinger off the bat of Hiram Bocachica. It wasn't the only embarrassing thing to happen for the Bees: with Curtis Pride on first, Jeff Mathis bunted — right into a double play. Man, that's annoying.

Howie Kendrick's RBI triple drove in a run early, and Casey Kotchman had an RBI groundout that drove him home.

It appears the River Cats' starting pitcher, Jason Windsor, was in the game on an emergency start as he only had three innings and was pulled with only 58 pitches.

2006-07-13: San Antonio 7, Arkansas 6 #
Haynes: 0-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Wood: 1-2, 1 2B, 3 BB, 1 K
Brown: 2-3, 1 3B
Evans: 3-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Wilson: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Hunter: (L, 2-9), 4.1 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 7 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 7.34 ERA
Zimmermann: 2.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 6.31 ERA
Three walks for Brandon Wood? I'll take that in a heartbeat. On the other hand, Chris Hunter had nothing. Nothing.

The Travs got close in a ninth inning rally that saw one of Brandon Wood's walks turn into a run, but the Missions squelched that rally by getting Matt Pali to fly out to left.

2006-07-13: Lake Elsinore 9, Rancho Cucamonga 6 #
Sutton: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Collins: 1-4, 1 RBI
Remole: 2-4
Toussaint: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Posey: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 7 K, 3 BB, 5.00 ERA
Lynch: (H, 6)(L, 2-3) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 2.03 ERA
Jepsen: 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 3.27 ERA
It says something about Kevin Lynch that he can give up four earned runs while only getting one guy out and still have only a 2.03 ERA. Micah Posey, for once, wasn't the cause of the trouble.
2006-07-13: Missoula 3, Orem 5 #
Mount: 1-3, 1 BB
Phillips: 0-4, 2 K
Nieves: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
O'Sullivan: 4.0 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.56 ERA
Cassevah: (W, 2-1) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.38 ERA
Arredondo: 1.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 1.17 ERA
Sean O'Sullivan got pulled in what looks like a tandem start for him, but you can't argue the results; he's given up exactly one earned run over sixteen innings. Bobby Cassevah and Felipe Arredondo also had good outings.

Abel Nieves scored on what should have been a Douglas Reinhardt single, but thanks to fielding and throwing errors by third baseman Andrew Fie (fie! fie!), the Orem batter made it safely to second and Abel Nieves scored, part of a five-run rally in the second that put the game away.

2006-07-13: AZL Mariners 2, AZL Angels 3 #
Ortiz: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Lewis: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Conger: 0-3, 1 BB
Ortiz: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
De Los Santos: 2-4
Jimenez: (W, 2-2), 5.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.80 ERA
Victor De Los Santos has a little seven-game hit streak going. The Angels scored all their runs in a three-run, bottom-of-the-fifth rally.
2006-07-13: Tucson 10, Las Vegas 5 #
Valdez: 2-3, 2 BB
Aybar: 2-5, 2 2B
Loney: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Young, D: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI
LaRoche: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K
Bellorin, E: 3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Houlton: 0-1, 1 K
Robles: 0-1
Houlton: (L, 4-9), 4.0 IP, 8 R, 8 ER, 10 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6.20 ERA
Hull: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.88 ERA
Miller: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 3.32 ERA
Kuo: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.20 ERA
Houlton on the mound and bad things are happening.
2006-07-13: Jacksonville 10, Tennessee 9 #
Greenberg: 0-1, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K
Hu, C: 1-4, 2 RBI
Meadows: 3-5, 1 HR, 5 RBI
Abreu: 1-5, 1 K
Raglani: 3-5, 2 2B, 1 K
Garcia: 4-5
Ellis: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 K
Kozlowski: (W, 3-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 2.14 ERA
Jacksonville scored all their runs in two five-run frames in this one. Anthony Raglani, despite today's 3-5 line, is still only hitting .224, and it may be time to take him off my watchlist. Starter Heath Totten went six innings and gave up six runs, five earned. The good news was Mark Alexander, who pitched another scoreless frame. He hasn't given up a run since a May 19 blown save, and notched his 19th save in this game. With those kinds of numbers, he's approaching real prospect status in my mind.
2006-07-13: Palm Beach 4, Vero Beach 5 #
Nicholson: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Dewitt: 0-5, 1 K
Santana: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Dunlap: 0-3, 1 K
Paul, X: 0-0, 1 BB
Hoffmann: 2-3, 1 RBI
Thomas: 5.2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 3.41 ERA
Leach: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 3.70 ERA
Pimentel: (W, 3-7) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.63 ERA
Vero entered the bottom of the ninth behind by one but managed to load the bases after 3B Ryan Barthelemy misplayed a sac bunt. Mike Sillman walked David Nicholson to give up the tying run, and then Carlos Santana singled in the game winner.
2006-07-13: Columbus 5, Savannah 3 #
De Jesus: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 BB, 1 K
Pedroza: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Mitchell: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Denker, T: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
Harper: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
McDonald: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 4.22 ERA
Troncoso: (BS, 1)(W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 1.59 ERA
The Catfish won this game in the tenth after Savannah tied it up in the bottom of the ninth. Consecutive homers by Sergio Pedroza and Russell Mitchell provided the offense to win the game.
2006-07-13: Helena 6, Ogden 7 #
Rogowski: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Fuller: 1-1, 2 BB
Perez: 0-1, 3 BB, 1 K
Bell: 0-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Taloa: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Medero-Stullz: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Van Slyke: 2-3, 1 RBI
Rodriguez, J: (W, 3-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.40 ERA
Ogden fashioned a four-run seventh that included a bases-loaded walk, and held on to win it.
2006-07-13: GCL Marlins 1, GCL Dodgers 8 #
Gutierrez, E: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Lizarraga: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 K
Mattingly: 0-5, 1 K
Ortiz: 1-5, 4 K
Robinson: 2-4, 1 K
Nunez: (W, 2-0), 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 7 K, 5 BB, 2.18 ERA
Eloy Gutierrez homered in this romp over the Marlins, one in which the Florida club's GCL team was four-hit by the Dodgers pitching staff.

Comments:
Nice to point out Brandon Wood's walks. Everyone has been focusing (justifiably so) on his high K rate. However, Wood has quietly improved his BB rate this year - currently he is 6th in the Texas League, just ahead of Alex Gordon, with 47. Last year, he had 48 walks for the entire season, and just 46 the year before. As opposed to our other minor league "high-K" whipping boy, Wood's walk rate is IMPROVING as he moves up; McPherson's steadily declined. So there's hope?

He's 21. He's learning. That's what the minor league's are for.

Reggie Willits continues to walk, too - 2nd in the PCL behind the immortal Jack Cust. Willits is sporting a nifty .435 OBP while trying to do the (almost) impossible: have a higher OBP than SLG!

Walks? In the Angels system?

Now, about that global warming thing....

Give Wood another few weeks or so and I'll regraph his trailing 10-day K/AB rate. If he really is getting better, it ought to show up there.

Jason Widsor was pulled after 3 innings because the Oakland A's may use him as an emergency starter early next week, so he was on a short pitch count, the Sacramento Bee reported today.
