Minor League Scorebook
News
- From Kevin Goldstein's Future Shock, news of an old friend and a new one:
Alexi Casilla, ss, Double-A New Britain (Twins)
Goldstein also has nice things to say about Stephen Marek ("there are better pitching prospects out there ... [but] you'd be hard-pressed to find a starter who's been more consistently good than Marek") while noting that at age 23, he needs to move quickly. Looks like he missed Friday's promotion to Rancho, too.Casilla had the most surprising placement when I ranked second baseman last week, but the question is becoming where he'll rank as a shortstop now. Moved up to Double-A, Casilla went 7-for-18 with a pair of stolen bases over the weekend in his first four Eastern League games, all on the left side of the infield. As always, there was no power, but the more people who see him, the more are convinced that he can hit in the big leagues.
- It's Monday, so time for BA's Prospect Hotsheet:
1. James Loney, 1b, Dodgers (Triple-A Las Vegas)
From the "In The Team Photo" section, more news of former Angel Alexi Casilla:
Loney has been knocking on the top spot's door for a couple of weeks now, and he has finally gotten there. The 22-year-old doesn't have great bat speed but clearly has learned to adjust to the skills he has. After going 6-for-11 in a short week, Loney is now hitting .489 in July and .391/.434/.577 on the season. Even before Howie Kendrick was promoted to the big leagues, Loney was leading the minors in hitting.3. Scott Elbert, lhp, Dodgers (Double-A Jacksonville)
Sure, he might have walked eight over his first 11 Double-A innings, but Elbert has emerged as the Dodgers' top pitching prospect and one of the elite pitching prospects in the minors this season. After going 5-5, 2.37 with 97 strikeouts in 84 innings at high Class A Vero Beach, Elbert was promoted to Jacksonville, where he won his first two starts as a Sun while striking out 15. Overall, Elbert has allowed just 59 hits in 95 innings this season.8. Stephen Marek, rhp, Angels (High Class A Rancho Cucamonga)
The highest paid draft-and-follow from the 2004 draft was dazzling for low Class A Cedar Rapids before earning a promotion to the Cal League. Marek allowed five runs in his last seven starts for the Kernels and was 10-2, 1.96 overall with 100 strikeouts and 24 walks in 119 innings.Alexi Casilla, ss, Twins (Double-A New Britain): As soon as Casilla came over to the Twins from the Angels -- even-up -- for lefthander J.C. Romero, he made a lasting impression on the Minnesota brass in spring training. After starting out at high Class A Fort Myers, Casilla was promoted to New Britain last week and hit safely over his first five games, going 7-for-18 (.389) with a pair of steals.
I know there's probably going to be some upset Angels fans in this, but it doesn't hurt my feelings too much. There's still a ways to go before he gets to the Show. - Matt Brown of the Travs was named Texas League Offensive Player of the Week; Nate Sutton of Rancho got the same honor in the Cal League.
- No Angel or Dodger prospect was named Pitcher of the Week.
- Update: Here's the weekly notebooks: PCL (Bees, 51's), Texas League (Travs), Southern League (Suns), California League (Quakes), Florida State League (Vero Beach Dodgers), Midwest League (Kernels), Sally League (Catfish), and the Pioneer League (Owlz, Raptors).
Scores
Aybar: 2-5, 1 RBI
McPherson: 2-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Eylward: 0-4, 3 K
Mathis, J: 1-4, 1 2B
Pavkovich: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Shell: 5.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.86 ERA
Wilhite, M: (W, 4-2) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.48 ERA
Could Dallas have been upset after learning he wasn't in the Angels' plans at third? That's a heckuva game right there, despite Steven Shell's lousy outing. Erick Aybar's RBI single was the game-winner. The win broke a four-game losing streak for the Bees.
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Morris: 3-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Mendoza: (W, 8-5), 8.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.81 ERA
Man, just when the Midwest League thought it was safe from the Kernels' rotation, here comes Tommy Mendoza! He's had quality starts in ten of his last eleven starts. In four of his last five starts he's allowed only one or no runs, and he's gone eight innings in three of them. In short, he could be on his way up to Rancho pretty soon, too.
Dallas Morris drove in all of Cedar Rapids' runs, on a double and a single.
Phillips: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 K
Knazek: 1-2, 1 2B, 2 BB
Calderon: (L, 0-1), 2.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 5.40 ERA
Just bad pitching as Leonardo Calderon and Brok Butcher combined to give up eight earned runs; Butcher's ERA is now up to 9.00. Luis Rivera had a couple solo blasts that didn't really affect the game's outcome.
Sweeney: 2-4, 3 RBI, 1 BB
De Los Santos: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Moore: 0-5, 4 K
Torres: 4.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 5.24 ERA
Reilly: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.50 ERA
Hank Conger's missed his second game in a row, and I'm wondering why. Maybe it's this Anel De Los Santos kid, who's having quite the hot streak, with hits in nine of his last ten games — at catcher. He doesn't walk at all, but he also doesn't strike out much, either. De Los Santos also drove in the game-winner in the top of the ninth, collecting an RBI groundout to cap a five-run ninth. Three errors by the A's caused an unearned run to score.
Valdez: 0-3, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Aybar: 3-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Loney: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Kemp: 1-3, 1 BB, 2 K
Young, D: 0-4, 3 K
Guzman, J: 1-3, 1 K
LaRoche: 0-4, 2 K
Robles: 1-1
Eckert: (L, 5-6), 5.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 7.09 ERA
Hamulack: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1.88 ERA
Eh, it's Eckert. Nice homer for Willy Aybar, along with that multi-hit night. Top Seattle catching prospect (and former Trojan) blasted a three-run double in the five-run fifth, which really decided the game.
Dewitt: 2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Dunlap: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Mathias: 1-2, 2 BB
Hoffmann: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 K
Johnson, B: 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 10 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.54 ERA
Megrew: 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.32 ERA
Leach: (W, 2-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 4.10 ERA
Yes, it's a win, but... Thanks for the homer, Blake.
Denker, T: 1-3, 1 BB
Wade: (L, 6-5), 3.1 IP, 9 R, 8 ER, 9 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.96 ERA
Hochgesang: 2.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 8.44 ERA
Pratt: 3.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 5.70 ERA
Van Slyke: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Bell: 1-4, 1 K
Brown: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wall: 6.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 4.11 ERA
Sanfler: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 5 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.70 ERA
Lizarraga: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Mattingly: 3-4, 2 RBI
Garcia: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Kershaw: 4.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1.64 ERA
Dutton: (W, 3-1) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 4.22 ERA
This Mattingly kid seems to know a little bit about hitting. He has a little three-game hitting streak, with multiple hits in each game. Good start for Kershaw, too.
Seriously, even assuming some of them get switched to the 'pen and some of them don't pan out, it's hard to see where there'd be room for all of them: Adenhart, Arredondo, Marek, Mendoza, not to mention tonight's starter (Joe Saunders), considering that John Lackey and Jered Weaver aren't going anywhere, and hopefully Ervin Santana isn't, either.
