- Chris Bootcheck was optioned to AAA Salt Lake to make room for Kelvim Escobar, who returned from the DL today.
Bootcheck says he's feeling better after a left hamstring injury
in May:
"I went through a spell after the hamstring, a little issue with timing and the numbers kind of showed that," Bootcheck said. "Stuff-wise I think I'm back to where I was in spring training.
"Everything seems to be in synch. It's a great feeling to be out there and put the ball where you want and throw as hard as you want and trust it is going to go there. I'm going to go to Salt Lake and continue what I've been doing and hopefully I'll be back."
- Thinking about yesterday's discovery that Hank Conger has quietly disappeared with a hamate bone fracture, I suddenly noticed in tonight's Salt Lake game that Jason Bulger hasn't made an appearance in over a month, and in fact has been on the DL since June 17. I've got a bug in Tim Mead's ear regarding what and how long.
- Speaking of injuries, Kernels RHP Amalio Diaz and RHP Robert Romero were placed on the DL, and RHP Brok Butcher and RHP Darren O'Day were called up from Orem. As the Owlz don't yet have any information on who they got to replace those players, we're in limbo for a bit.
- In a trade that could effect how the NL West turns out (heck, at this point, a butterfly's wings flapping could affect that), the Cubs dealt reliever Scott Williamson to the Padres for minor league pitchers Joel Santo and Fabian Jimenez Angulo, both previously pitching for low-A Fort Wayne.

Steven got Shelled (bad name for a pitcher, that, almost as bad as Grant Balfour), his third straight bad outing since returning from the DL on July 8. The bad news started with a five-run fifth that included a grand slam by Sidewinder Brian Barden. He got ripped again in a four-run fourth keyed by a bases-loaded triple by former Angel prospect Alberto Callaspo.

D-Mac pasted a solo homer, who also got on base on a hit-by-pitch. It was a tough outing for Nick Gorneault, who made his first AAA appearance since coming back from the DL.

Wilson: 1-4
Davidson: (L, 2-8), 4.2 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 5.54 ERA
That Jamie Moyer-style career seems to be slipping away from Dan Davidson, who just hasn't been able to string together any kind of success this year. Brandon Wood got a silver sombrero, though Matt Brown's double extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Tino Sanchez, a 27-year-old catcher in AA, drove in five runs against the Travs.

A real slugfest and chock-full of good news for Angels fans who think the Halos don't walk enough: every Orem batter got at least one free pass, and in Christopher Pettit's case, three, as the Brewers walked fourteen batters and hit a pair of batters as well. P.J. Phillips homered in the wild victory.

A very nice bit of pitching for Clayton Kershaw, who got as many strikeouts as innings pitched while walking nobody; he's walked one in his professional career, which spans sixteen innings. Ryan Ketchner, who must be back on a rehab start, went two innings and damn near struck out the side twice, and bully for him. Kenley Jansen was perfect at the plate, and going into the game with a .217 average, he left it with a .266 average; he needed it.

Comments:
The Padres need a third baseman. I wonder if the Angels could use McPherson to pry Scott Linebrink away, who would surely solidify the Halos' beleagured middle relief corps.
