One Buwwet Weft: Dodgers 5, Diamondbacks 4
How many bullets he's got left in his arm, we're not sure. But we like what we see.Since Danys Baez had yet to blow a lead in the series, he was overdue, so after plunking Luis Gonzalez with two out in the eighth, Grady Little appeared to have learned his lesson about leaving bad relievers in and called to the bullpen for the reliable Takashi Saito. That gambit worked to end the inning, and it looked like it would be another 1-2-3 top of the ninth when Saito got two quick outs.— Grady Little, about Takashi SaitoBugs: (Affected surprise) No more buwwets? (Turns to Daffy) Hey, laughing boy, no more buwwets!
Daffy: No more buwwets?
Daffy: Here! Lemme see that thing! (Snatches gun)
Daffy: Hmmmmmm... (shoots self)
Elmer: (Delighted) Well, what do ya know ... one buwwet weft!!— "Wabbit Season"
But it didn't work out that way as Craig Counsell walked and Jeff DaVanon singled. Saito's walk of Eric Byrnes loaded the bases, and when Chad Tracy followed with a two-run RBI single, it looked like some kind of communicable disease had passed on via shared mound contact between the Dodgers' Japanese closer and their Cuban-born reliever. Yet, Saito bore down and got his final out, striking out Conor Jackson and thus sealing Brad Penny's 10th win of the season. So, hooray.
Update: And, yeah, that was a real Tschida call there, Tim.
