Perfect-1: Angels 3, A's 0

Moving Mike Napoli to the two-slot didn't help much in today's game, but in the end, it didn't matter much; the game was really John Lackey's. Lackey gave up a leadoff double and then retired the next 27 batters in order, one hit away from a perfect game. His ten strikeouts matched a career record; it was his fourth shutout of the season.

All the Angels' offense came on home runs, a two-run shot by Robb Quinlan and an unusual Chone Figgins homer.

Update: Blez reminds me that this was the first time an inside-the-game perfect game has been pitched since Jerry Reuss did it for the Dodgers on June 11, 1982.

Update 2: And, oh yes, the Rev is right, adding O-Cab's picture to the home page mast jinxed his streak, which ends at 63 games.

Comments:
it was his fourth shutout of the season.

It was technically his FIRST shutout of the season. He pitched three other scoreless games but didn't finish any of them.

details, details.

Lackey remains the most unhittable pitcher in the league (lowest batting average against, lowest slugging against, fewest hits per 9). That he hasn't even been considered for the All-Star game is disheartening.
