Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Mike Busch LAN b. 1968, played 1995-1996
Billy Herman BRO b. 1909, played 1941-1943, 1946, All-Star: 1934-1943, Hall of Fame: 1975 (Veterans), d. 1992-09-05. He got into the Hall because of his exploits at second base in a Cubs uniform, yet he was still solid enough as a Dodger to help win the 1941 pennant. Leo Durocher once said of him that he was "universally accepted as the classic number-two hitter...an absolute master at hitting behind the runner."
Glenn Hoffman LAN,CAL b. 1958, played 1987, 1989. Brother of Padres' closer Trevor, Glenn is now coaching third base for San Diego as well.
Bill Melton CAL b. 1945, played 1976, All-Star: 1971. He hit 33 home runs in 1971, and got the league lead on the last game of the season, too, the only White Sox player (up to that time, at least) to win the league lead in homers. He was a utility player by the time the Angels got him; he peaked awfully early, retiring when he was only 31.
Tim Nordbrook CAL b. 1949, played 1976
Jeff Shaw LAN b. 1966, played 1998-2001, All-Star: 1998, 2001. Ironic that this comes the day after Gagné's condition gets worse, isn't it? The Konerko-for-Shaw trade has to be one of the worst in recent Dodger history, but it was Dan Evans' inspiration to let Eric Gagné take over the closer's job in 2002.
Johnny Van Cuyk BRO b. 1921, played 1947-1949
Roster Notes
- The Angels have given a $1M signing bonus to Korean prep pitcher Jung Young-il (probably in canonical Western form Young-il Jung). The team will issue a press conference about it on Sunday (their time? Saturday ours?) to discuss it.
- Jeff Weaver will not make his first start with the Cards until after the All-Star break.
- Jeff Kent will probably miss another couple of games thanks to his abdominal strain.
- The Dodgers signed undrafted free agent Lyndon Poole from the Urban Youth Academy, the first such player from the Academy to be signed.
