Mike Ramsey LAN b. 1960, played 1987
Ken Sanders CAL b. 1941, played 1974. Kind of the Kenny Lofton of his day in that he ended up working for nine different clubs by the time his career was over, and the amazing thing about that was that he did it before the end of the Reserve Clause. A righty relief specialist who only worked one start in his major league career, he once led the league in losses by a reliever in 1966, though he also won the 1971 AL Fireman of the Year award from the Sporting News.
Al Spangler CAL b. 1933, played 1965-1966
Jerome Walton CAL b. 1965, played 1993
Tex Wilson BRO b. 1901, played 1924, d. 1946-09-15
Le Bat Juste: Dodgers 9, Giants 7
Chad Billingsley has had one quality start so far in his major league career, and that against the punchless Angels. Leaving last night's game with a we'd-send-you-to-Las-Vegas-kid-but-we-can't 5.27 ERA and a record stuck on 0-2, he walked four yet none of them scored; Bills' problem yesterday was the longball, giving up a solo shot to Ray Durham and a three-run dinger to Barry Bonds, the 720th of his storied career. Luckily for the Dodgers, Jeremy Accardo gave up a two-run shot to Nomar, and the W goes to the Dodgers.Roster Notes
- The Mets designated for assignment former Dodger Jose Lima, following an emergency start replacing Pedro Martinez. Lima gave up seven earned runs in a 7-3 loss to Florida, including a grand slam by Dontrelle Willis. The Marlins scored six runs in that inning, and have done so in three consecutive games, the first time a National League team has done that since the advent of the designated hitter in the AL; the last time it happened was in 1959 when the Red Sox did it against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The slam was the first by a pitcher since Robert Person of the Phillies accomplished the feat in 2002. (Via BTF.)
- Derek Lowe, cancer survivor.
- Some guy up north thinks Dontrelle Willis will be a Dodger next year. Or a Giant.
- Mike Scioscia defers to his veteran and will continue to have Anderson face lefties.
"We need him to hit lefties the way he can," Scioscia said. "There's a lot of things this club desperately needs on the offensive side. You want to give it the time it needs to materialize."
Half a season isn't enough? - The Angels have not yet signed a contract with Young-il Jung (and I was right about the name reversal). Bill Stoneman says his scouts have talked about a deal "in that neighborhood".
A's Fans Demonstrated To Keep Team In Oakland
Fans at last night's game were supposed to try and bring out a show of strength to keep Oakland in Oakland, but they can only muster 20,000 for a Friday night game against a hated rival that's won the division pennant twice on their turf? Scratches head. They were hoping for 300 protesters, but I guess the results were less than impressive.Newer› ‹Older
