Pickoff Moves

Today's Birthdays

Two days, three Hall of Famers. I wonder what the record is?

Tommy McCarthy BRO b. 1863, played 1896, Hall of Fame: 1946 (Old Timers), d. 1922-08-05. Maybe if they renamed the Veterans' Committee back to the Old-Timers' Committee they might elect a few guys. Bill James rated him the 88th best right fielder in history (behind Tim Salmon, by the way, at number 72, though that was written before Timmy's 2000 and 2001 seasons). Noted for his speed and brains, he would trap the ball to deke baserunners, and even used it twice in one game. Considering he played in an environment hugely more favorable to offense than even today's enviornment, his counting stats look unimpressive, yet he's in the top five in league- and park-adjusted runs per game at right field. He wore a Brooklyn uniform for one year, the last of his career.

Norihiro Nakamura LAN b. 1973, played 2005. And I understand he's back in the J-leagues, and go him.

Joe Schultz BRO b. 1893, played 1915, d. 1941-04-13

Joe Wall BRO b. 1873, played 1902, d. 1936-07-17

Preston Ward BRO b. 1927, played 1948

Shawn Wooten ANA b. 1972, played 2000-2003. I keep looking for him; when he was worth keeping on your bench, he had pretty good value as a 1B/catcher type who had a little pop. Losing him after 2003 convinced the Angels they needed Josh Paul, and that was probably a mistake.

Pat Jordan's Times Interview With The McCourts

Jon's already gone over this to the extent necessary, though I would say that Jordan let the pair hang themselves rather than nailing up the scaffold himself.

Enough, Already: Cardinals 6, Dodgers 1

Win, wouldja? Swept, and though it's not a surprise, that doesn't make it go down any easier. Cards starter Jason Marquis got his league-leading 12th win, and the Cards homered in 19 straight games. Thppt.
