Random Bullety Stuff
- J.A. Adande writes about Howie Kendrick:
"It's easier" with the team winning, "everybody's in a good rhythm, everybody's upbeat and they kind of welcome you in a little more, just to try to fit in and be a part of this team, it feels good," Kendrick said.
- Dustin Moseley was shocked to get the call:
"At first, when I was called into the manager's office, I thought I was being traded," said Moseley, who is expected to make one or two starts for the Angels before returning to Salt Lake. "Then, when he told me I was going up, I was very excited. It's awesome, a dream come true."
Moseley, a 23-year-old right-hander from Texarkana, Ark., will try to keep those emotions in check tonight to be effective against the Indians.
"These guys have such a good thing going, I just want to contribute, do something to benefit the club," said Moseley, who was acquired from Cincinnati for Ramon Ortiz in 2004. "I'm getting an opportunity. I want to make the most of it."
- Darin Erstad will fly to New York to see foot specialist William Hamilton.
- The Wall Street Journal has a fun mid-season Fix column recounting just how wrong their picks were. Anne Ursu, aka Batgirl, wrote
The Tigers just don't lose. My Twins won 19 of 20 and picked up a game. It's just selfish. ... I think the Cards and the rest of the NL Central teams are going to try to lose intentionally the rest of the season just to avoid any prospect of facing an AL Central team in the postseason. ... I had picked the Yankees to win the East, because that's just what they do, but now we're facing a possible world where they don't even make the playoffs, which is worth rooting for just to see what it does to the spirits of the ESPN/Fox commentators. The Fox guys still haven't recovered from Jeter not winning the Final Vote boondoggle last year.
...
My rookie of the year selection is beginning to turn into my Cy Young selection. It's amazing watching Liriano. The fun part, really, is watching the expression on the hitters' faces after they strike out -- some combination of wonder and existential despair, like they're suddenly questioning, not just their self-worth, but the whole nature of the universe. Then they go into the clubhouse and read Nietzsche.
- ESPN Page 2 writer D.J. Gallo predicts the Angels will win the AL West but foresees a third-place finish for the Dodgers.
- The Blue Jays are more interested in Kendrick than Kennedy? Say it ain't so!
- Jeff Weaver's getting a fresh start in St. Louis; he'll throw his first game for the Cards in tonight's contest against Atlanta.
- Speaking of Jeff, the former Angel/Dodger/Yankee/Tiger is fifth in Enrique Rojas's list of busts this year. At least the Angels were able to get rid of him... I wonder what Billy Beane will do with bust #10, Esteban Loiaza, or the Mariners with busts #2 and #3, Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson.
- Jon's got a new SI column, this time about relief pitchers.
And of course Toronto's more interested in Kendrick than AK. Who wouldn't be? But if JP thinks he can get Howie the Hammer for a rental of Hinske or Hillenbrand, he's been spinning on the rotisserie too long. I assume that's idle press speculation. The Blue Jay's FO isn't that dizzy.
