Rosenthal: Padres Interested In Beltre
The Padres, continuing their search for a third baseman, are taking aim at a talented, expensive and perhaps unattainable option — the Mariners' Adrian Beltre.Short of a Nancy Kerrigan type move to Beltre's left ankle, I sort of doubt moving south and back to the NL West will help him all that much; he just happened to have one of the biggest fluke seasons I've ever seen in my life. The Mariners likely will entertain offers for Beltre only if they fall out of contention by the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Undaunted, the Padres have identified Beltre as their No. 1 target, FOXSports.com has learned.
The Padres released third baseman Vinny Castilla on Wednesday, and for now will play Geoff Blum and Mark Bellhorn at third, with Class AAA third baseman Justin Leone representing another possibility.
More retorts at BTF, including a DMZ-penned trade proposal that goes like this:
Step 1: Send Adrian Beltre, Shin-Soo Choo, and Julio Mateo to San Diego for Ryan Klesko and Dave Roberts.Step 2: Send Richie Sexson to San Francisco for Todd Linden and Steve Finley.
Step 3: Send Gil Meche and George Sherrill to the Atlanta Braves for Wilson Betemit
Step 4: Send Wladimir Balentien, Yung-Chi Chen, and Cesar Jimenez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Sean Casey and Kip Wells
