Bryan Smith Hangs 'Em Up

It's just too much, and so much for that. Thanks for all the great columns on minor league baseball, Bryan. You will be missed.

Comments:
We take it for granted that BTF, BP, the Weismans, McMillins and Timmermans, et. al. will be around forever, putting forth mucho informacion for free. It's why I'm not too worried about going back to school where my blog reading will be reduced from "hourly" to "weekly-if-I'm-lucky." I don't sweat it because I assume my faves will always be around.

And then along comes news that Bryan Smith is moving on and I start thinking of things I'd rather not think about--Weisman gets another gig, McMillin gets hired by a big league club and Timmerman is made HOF librarian. And we lose, people. On that day, we lose. I don't want to over-sentimentalize or get overly dramatic (too late on both counts!) but I would encourage--nay, I would implore--that we appreciate what we have.

I don't make the time to read the Times because I hate them. It's because there's better stuff on the web. Long may it be so.

If Rob gets hired by a big league club, it sure as fuck won't be for their marketing department - unless it is time to scare the fans away to assist a greedy owner who wants to move elsewhere.

Grow up, Mat.

Y'know, Mat, I had honestly thought Rob was overreacting to all this. But from that comment it's clear that you really are directly attacking him.

I'm really sorry this season's a disapointment. Please stop swearing at and disparaging your friends.

You obviously have not read Rob's Wednesday afternoon attack on me and Matt Welch in the comments section of the Chronicles blog.

And I quote:

The only smugness in the room is Mat Gleason, and his partner-in-crime, Matt Welch, both of whom are happy to shout down and insult anyone who disagree with them, using adolescent taunts to do it.

What part of this is contrary to the facts? Matt launched a personal attack against both me and Seitz for having the nerve to come out and question whether the Angels were going to win the division. Your promotion of that diary, and handing it your highest public accolade, i.e., "panther", showed that you agreed with it vehemently both in tone and content. Far from a personal attack, the above quoted commentary accurately reflects the sort of behavior you've engaged in without remorse or cease ever since.

Now you're telling me what I have and haven't read. You're wrong, I have. In fact I was over at the Chronicles not half an hour ago reading that very comment thread. As I said, I originally thought he was overreacting. I don't think so now, because you came over here and made that comment in a thread that had nothing to do with this argument.

Look, you guys made a choice. You chose to use a pop culture reference, which by definition not everyone is going to get, and one that was derogatory and vulgar at that. Top it off with the post being disdainfully directed at Rob (among others.) Then you guys get all high and mighty when he gets offended.

Duh. Grow up, get over it.
