The Cedar Rapids Kernels will be wearing pink jerseys on Thursday, August 10 as part of a cancer awareness program. Breast cancer, okay, but... pink for all cancers? Even prostate cancer? Hm.

In the top of the third, Tyler Johnson reached on an error by Thomas Giles, and consecutive wild pitches got him to third base, though nothing came of it; in all, Wall uncorked three wild pitches, part of a total of six in the game, and three hit batters, two by Orem and one by Ogden.

Comments:
Did you read what Bryan Smith had to say about Mark Trumbo, after watching him play in person? Smith on Trumbo:

"Mark Trumbo (LAA/A-/1B): There is danger in projecting a breakout before you see a player in person. Trumbo is that type of player, as his lack of athleticism shocked me when I saw his big body manning first in Cedar Rapids this spring. Trumbo has big power that should blossom in the Cal League, but his slow bat and poor fielding ability don’t leave a lot of hope. Trojan fans, if it makes you feel better, I can't imagine someone that large being much of a pitching prospect."

By the way, why can't someone "that large" be much of a pitching prospect? After all, Bobby Jenks is a big man and yet a fairly effective hurler.

Hardballtimes.com has a piece on the subject of call-ups who might have an impact down the stretch and in the play-offs, a la K-Rod. One possible impact player, says the author, is Howie Kendrick. Here's the link:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/who-wants-to-be-the-next-k-rod/

Of course, the difference is that K-Rod was a relatively unknown double-A pitcher who got called up in mid-September, while Kendrick was pretty much a consensus top-5 prospect and would have been a ROY candidate on most teams (which would not have blocked him coming out of ST with the likes of A.K.), and who started to make significant contributions just after the All-Star break.

Rob: re Sean O'Sullivan, how is it that he can have such a low ERA with only 3 quality starts?

Sean O'Sullivan has had pitch count limits...

David Ortiz is a pretty big guy. Is Trumbo even larger than that?

Matthew -- yes, John is correct, he was on a pitch count early in the season, and so while he started, he was typically being stretched slowly to the point where he could get five innings in.
