Minor League Scorebook
News
- The Diamondbacks recalled Alberto Callaspo; he has roughly the same problem on the Diamondbacks' roster as he did with the Angels, namely an overcrowded infield with no place to put him. Callaspo leads the minors in hits.
- The Travs have extended their deal with the Angels through 2008.
“We are proud to have the Los Angeles Angels as the affiliate of the Arkansas Travelers as we enter into a new era of baseball in Central Arkansas,” [Travs General Manager Bill] Valentine said. “The talent and coaching supplied to us by the Angels have been top notch over these past six seasons. We enjoy working with Bill Stoneman, Tony Reagins and their staffs and look forward to a successful run together at Dickey-Stephens Park.”
And of course I couldn't be happier, having family in the Little Rock area. - Blake DeWitt got promoted to AA Jacksonville, which Rotoworld takes to mean the Dodgers have given up on him as a second baseman with Tony Abreu firmly entrenched at that position there. DeWitt will be the team's starting third baseman instead.
- I'm going to bed early; updates tomorrow morning with the usual Monday links.
- Update: I missed Baseball America's low-A Best Tools, which tabs Nick Adenhart for Best Pitching Prospect; Columbus manager Travis Barbary was named Best Managerial Candidate.
- Speaking of BA, here's the stuff from this week's Hot Sheet:
6. Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Dodgers (Rookie-level Gulf Coast League)
In the "In The Team Photo" section:
The No. 6 overall pick in the draft is No. 6 in our hearts after striking out 21 in 11 innings of two starts last week. If the Dodgers promote him, it will be to high Class A Vero Beach so he can keep reaping the tax benefits of Florida, which has no state income tax.Kendry Morales, 1b, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake): Morales has compiled six multi-hit games over his last eight, a stretch that has also included five home runs. Before he got called up to the big leagues for two months, the Cuban defector hit .408 in May, and was raking at a .426 clip so far in August.
And "Not-So-Hot":Joel Guzman, of, Devil Rays (Triple-A Durham)
The 21-year-old looks lost since the trade that sent him to the Devil Rays. He is 3-for-19 with no walks and seven strikeouts for the Bulls and his elite prospect status is starting to come into question. It is still too early to give up on Guzman and he certainly has talent, but if he is going to be a left fielder, Carl Crawford's job in Tampa does not look to be in danger anytime soon. - Josh Bell of Ogden was named Offensive Player of the Week for the Pioneer League on the heels of a four-homer week; Craig Brazell was given the honor for his hitting in the Southern League with Jacksonville. No Angel was so named, though I do note that former Pirate system catcher J.R. House, whom I saw play against Arkansas earlier in the year, has been moved to first base and is doing a fine job in the Houston system in his efforts at the PCL's Round Rock franchise.
- Pitchers of the Week included a nod for Hong-Chih Kuo in the PCL. No Angels were so named.
- Weekly Notebooks: PCL (51's, Bees); Texas League (Travs); Southern League (Suns); Cal League (Quakes); Florida State League (Vero Beach Dodgers); Midwest League (Kernels); South Atlantic League (Catfish); Pioneer League (Owlz, Raptors).

Have I mentioned Richard Aldridge in this space before? At 22 he's a little old for his league here, but he's got a 13.06 K/9 and a 2.60 K/BB rate in 51 innings, and a 2.47 ERA to match. He appears to have been a 17th round pick out of Middle Georgia JC in 2004, but in those days he was going under the first name of Ryan. Someone to keep an eye on.

- a bunt single
- stole second
- advanced to third on a balk, in the same at-bat
- stole home following a walk of Carlos Colmenares, who stole second on Fuller's steal of home.
