Minor League Scorebook
News
- Dallas McPherson has been working out at first for Salt Lake, and may provide depth at that position once he returns to the Angels' lineup.
- Casey Kotchman has not resumed baseball activities and is lost for the year. Those of you who doubted me when I suggested as much can start apologizing now.
- The Angels named Sean Rodriguez of Rancho the Offensive Player of the Month, Cedar Rapids' Tommy Mendoza Pitcher of the Month, and Jeff Mathis Defensive Player of the Month.
- The Angels extended their contract with Salt Lake through 2012.
- A day late, and thanks to the anonymous commenters in yesterday's Scorebook for pointing these out: Bryan Smith loses faith in Mark Trumbo...
- ... and Brian Tsao thinks Howie Kendrick might lead the Halos to the postseason. Not with his August numbers he won't...

Every time Dallas goes down to Salt Lake after some injury or other, it seems like it takes him forever to get back into the swing of things, and this time is no different. He's been in six games so far and has exactly five hits to show for it, including three consecutive 0-4 games; at least this time he didn't get a golden sombrero. He did manage to get on base, but only by way of a hit-by-pitch.
Other'n that: Nick Gorneault homered in his only hit of the game. Yesterday's 0-4 game marked the end of a seven-game hitting streak, so he's starting another one, maybe. Jeff Mathis has a seven-game on-base streak going, and had his best night at the plate in over a week, with only his second multihit game this month. Jonathan Rouwenhorst didn't get out of the fourth, and Matt Hensley didn't help matters by giving up three runs, two earned.

Diaz: 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1.03 ERA
Clayton Kershaw's dominance of the GCL continues apace, though this victory marks only his second win; he's only had one quality start this year, but his 1.03 ERA, 13.50 K/9, and 6.50 K/BB tell you what you need to know about the kind of success he's had in the early going. Wilfredo Diaz also deserves mention, as he's striking out almost a batter an inning while walking only a third of that.
Shortstop Esteban Lopez went 3-4, continuing a fine stretch of hitting that's seen him bring his average to .349. 3B Brian Mathews and LF Trayvon Robinson both drove in three, Robinson's on a three-run jack.
