Minor League Scorebook

News

Here's a nice story in the Salt Lake Tribune about Jeff Mathis. Excerpt:
"The lack of home runs was something that bothered me a couple weeks back," Mathis said. "I didn't understand where the power went. My swing has changed a bit since last year. I'm hitting more line drives."

Harper and hitting coach Jim Eppard weren't worried.

"Homers are a streaky thing," Harper said. "He's driving the ball, but he's just not lifting it. If he didn't have the doubles, I'd be concerned.

"Scioscia has called and told me to tell Jeff that he's still in the team's plans. . . . You don't see too many 23-year-olds catching in the big leagues. He'll figure it out."

Bulger: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.01 ERA
Nate Bland and Chris Bootcheck combined to give up nine runs, eight earned, in a blowout by the Giants. Jeff Heaverlo got mopup duties for the ninth, and he, too, surrendered three more runs, all earned. Brian Cooper, the hapless kid on the mound the day I discovered the magic tickets, pitched two scoreless frames.
2006-08-15: Arkansas 4, Frisco 5 #
Wood: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Brown: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Evans: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Porter: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Bacon: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Arredondo: 5.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6.23 ERA
Edwards: (L, 7-6) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 5.60 ERA
Casey Benjamin's walkoff double off Bill Edwards put Arkansas in the loss column. Brandon Wood and Matt Brown both homered, Brown's longball tying the game; it was Wood's 25 dinger of the season. Tonight's game also marked the second consecutive in which Wood had no strikeouts at all; he hasn't had more than one in a game since August 9, which for him marks a pretty sizeable improvement. He isn't walking appreciably (two all month), but at least the K's are getting better.

Former Angel Lou Pote got the win by pitching the last three innings for Frisco.

2006-08-15: Lancaster 4, Rancho Cucamonga 3 #
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K

Jepsen: (L, 4-3) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.60 ERA
I don't have a log for this game, but it looks like the Quakes took a lead going into the ninth and Kevin Jepsen blew it in relief, thus occluding Karl Gelinas' fine outing.
2006-08-15: Cedar Rapids 9, Clinton 3 #
Coon: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Statia: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K

Madison Edwards brought his average to the Mendoza line and drove in four on a night that saw him hit only his second homer of the year. Flint Wipke also homered in the in, while Amalio Diaz found himself at Cedar Rapids this week, and pitched a fine five innings.

LaMura: (W, 6-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1.61 ERA
Anthony Raglani's RBI single drove in the winning run. Blake DeWitt's 0-3 night brought his season average down to .162, and what's he doing batting third? 26-year-old Ben Kozlowski had a fine game, striking out seven over six innings while limiting Birmingham to only two runs.
2006-08-15: Vero Beach 0, Dunedin 2 #
Paul, X: 1-4, 2 K
Dunlap: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K

Thomas: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.44 ERA
The Blue Jays three-hit the Dodgers, and the Dodger returned the favor — except that the Jays actually scored a couple. A tough luck loss for Jonathan Figueroa, who goes to 0-6 on the season.

Gracia: (W, 3-2) (in relief), 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.72 ERA
Clayton Kershaw lasted only four innings, but it was the Mets who got pasted; Kyle Johnson in particular took a pounding, as he gave up four runs, all earned, and made no outs, by walking the bases loaded and then walking the next man to score; all his runners scored.
