Scores

2006-08-19: Salt Lake 3, Portland 2 #
Aybar: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Murphy: 0-4, 1 K
Eylward: 0-3
Gorneault: 0-4, 3 K
Mathis, J: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Davidson: (W, 1-0), 5.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.80 ERA
Rouwenhorst: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.67 ERA
Clearly, what they need is more leagues for guys like Dan Davidson, so he can move around and never have to worry about batters catching on to his soft-tossing lefty act. I mean, going through five with only two runs, one earned in your AAA debut? Astonishing. But manager Brian Harper surely had a clue, as he pulled Davidson despite only 58 pitches thrown exiting the fifth; but we want to keep the lad's confidence up. (Incidentally, it's too bad MILB.com doesn't report pitch counts for levels below AAA.)

Erick Aybar's two-run double turned out to be the difference; Nick Gorneault collected a silver sombrero. All the game's runs were scored in two innings, the three-run fifth for Salt Lake, and a two-run fourth for the Beavers. Home plate umpire A.J. Wendel ejected Portland manager Craig Colbert and third baseman Justin Leone in the ninth.

2006-08-19: Midland 5, Arkansas 4 #
Peel, A: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Rodriguez, S: 0-4, 3 K
Evans: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 K
Wilson: 0-4
Rodland: 1-1, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Green: (L, 8-4), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.48 ERA
Edwards: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.77 ERA
Back to mediocrity for Nick Green, who had come off an eight-inning, 11 K shutout in his last start. Aaron Peel and Eric Rodland both homered in the loss, and Jeff Heaverlo pitched a scoreless ninth in his AA debut.
2006-08-19: Inland Empire 2, Rancho Cucamonga 0 #
Statia: 0-4, 1 K
Collins: 0-4, 2 K
Toussaint: 0-2, 1 BB, 2 K
Mosebach: (L, 0-1), 8.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 2.25 ERA
Jepsen: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.33 ERA
Bobby Mosebach got a tough-luck loss despite pitching a fine game, as Justin Thomas got a complete game four-hitter for the 66ers, the first complete game of his career. Josh Leblanc's double was the only extra-base hit the Quakes had.
2006-08-19: Cedar Rapids 5, Kane County 7 #
Albano: 2-4, 1 2B
Morris: 3-4, 2 RBI
Smith: 2-3, 1 RBI
Hill: (L, 3-10), 5.1 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 8 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 4.74 ERA
2006-08-19: Orem 4, Billings 5 #
Bourjos: 2-5, 2 2B
Mount: 1-4, 1 K
Knazek: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Herndon: 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 2.24 ERA
Arredondo: (BS, 4)(L, 4-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.23 ERA
Kenneth Herndon had a solid game, and Orem took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, when Felipe Arredondo gave up three runs (two of them baserunners inherited from reliever Blake Holler) on a wild pitch and an RBI triple to Daniel Dorn. Scott Knazek homered in the loss.
2006-08-19: AZL Royals 7, AZL Angels 2 #
Lewis: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Schoeninger: (L, 5-2), 5.0 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 2.17 ERA
Miller: 3.1 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 0.79 ERA
The Angels got pasted, something they've done a lot to other teams this year. It says something about Timothy Schoeninger's record that he can absorb this kind of a game and still have a very respectable ERA. Christopher Lewis homered in the loss.
2006-08-19: Las Vegas 1, Tacoma 7 #
Garcia: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Robles: 0-4, 1 K
Kemp: 0-4, 3 K
Young, D: 0-4, 3 K
LaRoche: 1-2, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Loney: 1-1, 1 2B
Reid: (L, 1-7), 7.0 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 9 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 3 HR, 5.79 ERA
Osoria: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.43 ERA
About what you'd expect from Justin Reid, but certainly not what you'd expect from Matt Kemp, etc. Sergio Garcia's solo homer was the only scoring play for the 51's.
2006-08-19: Jacksonville 1, Birmingham 4 #
Raglani: 3-5, 1 K
Nall: 7.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 8 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 2.98 ERA
Simmons: (L, 1-3) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.68 ERA
Justin Simmons gave up a walkoff three-run jack in the 11th, both teams having scored one through seven frames.
2006-08-19: Jupiter 3, Vero Beach 2 #
Dunlap: 2-4
Paul, X: 0-4, 2 K
Hoffmann: 1-2, 1 BB
Arias, M: (L, 0-1), 7.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 12 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 2.25 ERA
A season high for strikeouts by Marlon Arias wasn't enough to save the Dodgers, who trailed from the second inning on. Ryder Mathias allowed a baserunner on catcher's interference in the seventh, but it amounted to nothing, as Arias struck out the next batter to end the inning.
2006-08-19: Columbus 5, Rome 1 #
De Jesus: 0-5, 1 K
Denker, T: 0-3, 2 BB
May: 0-3, 2 BB
Harper: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Perez: 2-5
Godwin: 3-4, 2 RBI
Rivera, J: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Alvarez: (W, 6-9), 5.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 6.32 ERA
Brooks: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
The Catfish led from the two-run second inning on in this one. Mario Alvarez almost made it to quality start land, his last one being on July 15.
2006-08-19: Ogden 5, Great Falls 7 #
Berezay: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Taloa: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Soto: 3-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Wall: (L, 3-4), 5.0 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4.64 ERA
Gearhart: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 10.06 ERA
Great Falls ended a ten-game losing streak by beating up on Josh Wall; Jesus Soto drove in two of the team's five runs.
2006-08-19: GCL Dodgers 2, GCL Nationals 0 #
Herrera: 0-2, 2 BB
Mattingly: 0-4, 1 K
Gardner: (W, 4-1), 8.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 H, 9 K, 2 BB, 2.08 ERA
It's a good idea not to get too excited about guys who dominate at this level, but Michael Gardner's numbers are ever so solid; he's got a 7.53 K/9, but he's only walked three batters all season, two of them in this game. Here he got his third win as a starter, his third in four tries.

Comments:
Isn't Dan Davidson a soft-tossing lefty who only allowed one earned run last night?

And this time I don't have any excuse, although I could have sworn I checked his handedness before writing that.

(longtime lurker). I was at the Tacoma Rainiers vs 51's game on Friday night. Fun time at the park even though the 51's got humbled. Matt Kemp looked awful, swinging at bad pitches and looking baffled on several changeups. Also, late in the game, LaRoche swung awkwardly at a pitch (mostly a flail attempt to foul it off), but then grimaced, wandered around slowly and was pulled from the game. Possibly a groin strain? The trainer hustled out to check but noticably did NOT touch whatever part was hurting. Any idea/news about what happened?

Apparently an injured neck and shoulder.
