Tech: RealNetworks To Launch Open Source Windows Media Player, Flip4Mac News, Too
Via Slashdot, RealNetworks is poised to launch a new open source Windows Media Player that will work on Linux. The player was recently announced at Linuxworld Conference and Expo, though there's no shipping product at the moment; you can read RealNetworks' press release at their website. The player was a result of a licensing agreement RealNetworks signed with Microsoft, and an antitrust settlement.
In related news for Mac users, it appears that there may be a workaround for Flip4Mac users wishing to listen to MLB Gameday Audio. (See the 8/3/2006 4:00 PM post by user clementeg3.) Currently it doesn't look like it works on Firefox, but it does on Safari. I don't have my Intel MacBook with me at the office, but I'll look into this tonight.
