Wake Up, Scioscia: Rangers 7, Angels 6
Forget Scot Shields' ongoing trouble. Riddle me these:
- Why was Garret Anderson playing the field and Juan Rivera DH'ing, especially with flyballer Weaver out there? D'ya think that one of those triples might have been a double with Rivera out there?
- Why is Anderson hitting ahead of Rivera? (Caveat: he at least got a walk facing a lefty.)
- Why does Chone Figgins get to keep his leadoff spot despite a 2-18 slump?
Comments:
Totally agree with the points mentioned. Also, couldn't believe that Gregg gave ANYTHING for Teixeira to hit!
I don't understand Mike Scioscia.
Last year, for example, he continually started Jeff DaVanon at DH (neutralizing his most important skill, which was the ability to play all three OF positions, as well as his ability to come off the bench and bat from either side, and possibly draw a walk) while a better hitter (Juan Rivera) sat on the bench.
This year, he insists on once again putting the inferior fielder (GA) in left, while the demonstrably superior defender is relegated to DH. It is beyond odd; it's positively irrational.
What's more, he ignores the anecdotal evidence that GA seems to perform a heck of a lot better as a hitter/runner when he doesn't have to worry about saving some energy to run down balls in the OF.
So, Rivera is the better fielder and has the better arm, but he is relegated to the DH because of Anderson's contract, or because of some irrational loyalty for what GA did four years ago?
It's irrational. It's idiotic. And it pisses me off.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Figgins defender, and even I'm ready to concede that the guy should be hitting ninth at this point.
Many teams accommodate light hitting centerfielders for defensive reasons, and Figgins' defense has been pretty good in CF, but it's time to bump Izzy up top and insert Kendrick in the #2 spot.

So that they can go righty-lefty-righty in their 3-4-5 slots. That would be my guess.

And did anyone notice Morales hit two more homeruns last night? Would it be so bad to have him back playing first, moving Howie to second (where he belongs) and letting Adam "Team Player" Kennedy offer his support and leadership from the bench? You'd have to think they'd score a few more runs that way, no? But I'm just about over questioning Scioscia's antics anymore. While not quite as bad as Dusty Baker, his blind loyalty and stubborness just might cost this team the division.
