Minor League Scorebook
News
- Team USA beat host Cuba 8-5; Brandon Wood hit a two-run homer that broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the eighth.
- Here's some background information about AZL Angels' phenom Tim Schoneninger. He'll be 22 on Thursday, so he needs to phenominate at this level.
- The Dodgers have extended their agreement with Jacksonville, for two years.
- John Shoemaker was named Southern League Manager of the Year.
- Here's some playoff prevews for the Southern League and the Pacific Coast League.
- The PCL broke its previous attendance record, with more than 7.4 million fans showing up, with an average of over 6,600 per game. Sacramento was the top draw, with 728,000.
- The final Prospect Hot Sheet of the year is out. In the top 10:
10. Jonathan Meloan, rhp, Dodgers (Double-A Jacksonville)
No Angels prospect earned a mention.
All Meloan did was dominate at low Class A Columbus, then deal at high Class A Vero Beach and now give the Suns bullpen a shot in the arm down the stretch in their quest for back-to-back Southern League titles. Split across those three levels this season, the 22-year-old righthander went 3-1, 1.90 with 91 strikeouts in 52 innings.
Scores
2006-09-06: Salt Lake 3, Tucson 4 #
Murphy: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K
Morales: 1-4, 1 2B
McPherson: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Gorneault: 0-5, 2 K
Eylward: 3-5, 1 RBI
Olenberger: 7.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 0.00 ERA
Hensley: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 13.50 ERA
The first game in the PCL's best-of-five postseason format, Dallas McPherson, Mike Eylward, and Casey Smith all drove in a run apiece, and Kasey Olenberger pitched a solid seven innings. But then Marcus Gwyn pitched to three batters in the 8th, failing to make an out. Though he somehow managed to avoid getting tagged with the loss, it marked the beginning of a three-run meltdown that tied the game, including, ironically enough, an RBI double by Alberto Callaspo to bring home the first Sidewinder run of the game. Kasey Olenberger pitched seven strong innings, but the bullpen blew up again in the bottom of the 11th, when Alberto Callaspo drove home the winning run on a walkoff RBI single.
