They're Playing A Game Out There, Jon: Padres 10, Giants 2
Like everyone else in the NL West, it could be your turn at the end of the season to be first, and so the Pad people keep hoping against hope that their number will come up when the big roulette wheel stops. Despite the insanely lopsided score, this particular game was just thrilling, even if you were hoping for a Giants sweep to keep San Diego at bay in the division. For one thing, it featured a 3-3 Woody Williams who scored a pair of runs and even knocked one in; for another, I got to see Cla Meredith in action, and if you haven't seen him, he's simply amazing.All those things said, the big gripe I had was Jon Miller raving on and on about what a great guy Barry Bonds was during the top of the ninth. While he was on autopilot, the Padres were busting one upside Scott Munter's head and an exciting RBI double was happening. I don't mind that he's the Giants' broadcaster every other day of the week, but keep your mind on the game, Jon. It's what you're paid for.
Breaking In Rookies
In case you hadn't seen Matt Welch's magnum opus on Angels teams with large numbers of rookies on them, you really should; the effect that slumping or adjusting kids can have on a team is really quite profound, and the fact that the Angels are doing as well as they are in the face of bringing in so many new faces is really quite impressive. There's another club doing something similar, the Marlins, and they're pretty lucky, according to Frank Bundy III; it makes you wonder just how lucky the Angels have been.Bullety Leftovers
