This Day In History
An occaisional series from The Baseball Library:
- 2000: Alex Rodriguez drives in seven runs by himself with two home runs as the Mariners blast the Angels 21-9. The game set an Angels record for runs scored against.
- 1999: The Dodgers beat the Giants 9-4 in the last game ever played at Candlestick Park.
- 1989: Former Angel Nolan Ryan struck out 13 while wearing a Rangers uniform in a complete game shutout that ended in a 2-0 Rangers victory. Ryan completed the year with 301 strikeouts, the last of six 300+ strikeout seasons he would have in his career.
- 1984: The Angels beat the Texas Rangers 1-0 on the road as Mike Witt pitches a perfect game, one of only fourteen in the majors.
- 1983: The Dodgers beat the Giants 4-3 and the Padres beat the Braves 3-2 to clinch the Dodgers' division title.
- 1967: The mediocre 1967 Angels, who would finish 84-77, beat the Tigers 8-6 in the second half of a doubleheader. The loss knocked the Tigers into second place in a hot AL pennant race that had the Red Sox, Tigers, Twins, and White Sox in the chase into the season's last weeks.
- 1956: The Dodgers clinch on the last game of the season as they defeat the Pirates 8-6.
