A's Test Depth, Possibly Call Up Mark Kiger
With starting second baseman Mark Ellis out and no clear candidate available on the 40-man, the A's may put journeyman Mark Kiger on the postseason roster:
Mark Kiger left Triple-A Sacramento at the end of the minor-league season three weeks ago and went to coach kids in Temecula (Riverside County). In his wildest dreams, he never would have expected the call he got last week to report to the A's complex in Phoenix to start trying out for a spot on the ALCS roster.Kiger hit .233/.348/.330 in 176 at bats for AAA Sacramento this year; it was the 26-year-old's second try at AAA.His response when Pam Pitts, the A's director of baseball administration, called: "I was like, 'What? What?'", Kiger said with a laugh Sunday at the Coliseum.
Kiger, who played shortstop at Double-A and Triple-A this season, went through fielding drills with infield coach Ron Washington, with whom he's worked before, and said the entire day's experience was fun.
"He's awesome," Kiger said of Washington. "He taught me so much in a short span a couple of years ago, and after that, I made every routine play."
