Bullety Stuff
- The Angels declined J.C. Romero's option, instead electing for a $250,000 buyout.
- Darin Erstad's ankle surgery completed successfully; he will start a rehab assignment in a couple weeks. The former Angel, in the last year of a 4-year/$32M contract, is expected to accept an offer from the Angels for a minor-league deal similar to that given to Tim Salmon.
- Speaking of Timmy, here's what he had to say about the Angels on his way out the door:
I keep saying that this team is in the best health over the last few years that it has ever been in my career. When you look at the Minor Leagues, we're stockpiled, and you look at the Major Leagues, and we're always in position to go and get what we need. This team is primed to be winning for years to come.
Booyah. - The Times speculates that Brad Penny, "a five-inning pitcher with occasional back trouble, and [...] not beloved in the clubhouse", will be traded in the offseason.
- Joe Beimel was banished from the dugout in yesterday's game after the truth came out about his hand injury and it was discovered that the incident happened in a bar after curfew. Regardless of the geography of the incident, Beimel apologized to his teammates in a closed-door meeting Saturday before the game.
- Nomar Garciaparra and Jim Thome won Comeback Player of the Year awards for their respective leagues. Will Nomar be back in Dodger blue next year? I doubt it...
- Proof positive that Bill Plaschke will forgive anything as long as the person in question delivers good quote.
- The A's have offered Frank Thomas a two-year deal.
- Speaking of the A's, it's looking like they'll occupy a new stadium in Fremont, as the team has purchased parcels surrounding a 143-acre site formerly used as a racetrack.
- Here's an odd one: Keith Ginter, who played most of his season at AAA Sacramento, might end up on the A's ALCS roster even after he declared free agency upon the completion of the PCL's schedule. The reason for it is the injury to Mark Ellis, but Ginter would have to be signed on a major league contract for 2007.
- Rich Aurilia making a comeback with the Giants next year? With the team weighing whether to re-sign Ray Durham at second, and Brian Sabean publicly pushing the team to become younger, San Francisco has a lot of players who won't be returning in 2007, possibly including Barry Bonds.
- The Rangers will start interviewing managerial candidates presently.
- George Steinbrenner has labeled the Yankees' early exit from the playoffs "a sad failure", news to 22 other teams now ransacking their lexicons for adjectives to describe their seasons.
