Brickyard Kennedy BRO b. 1867, played 1892-1901, d. 1915-09-23. With a name like that, there has to be a story, and there is; he was an illiterate righty who shouted in all conversation. Since he couldn't read, he would go into restaurants and order whatever his teammates would have, or sometimes, the guy in the seat ahead of him; this once resulted in his ordering a charlotte russe, a dessert served on a cardboard cone, of which he lamented "the crust was so tough I could hardly eat it."
With the Dodgers, he had four 20-win seasons; later, as a Pirate, he traded five scoreless frames with Boston's Cy Young in Game 5 of the 1903 World Series, the first ever, only to lose it in the sixth to the tune of six runs (sparked partly by a defense collapse) in a game the Pirates eventually lost 11-2; they went on to lose the series, 5-3. It was his only postseason appearance, and his last major league appearance, as well. He died in 1950 of tuberculosis.
