Birthdays, Yesterday And Today

Yesterday

Whitey Alperman BRO b. 1879, played 1906-1909, d. 1942-12-25

Ownie Carroll BRO b. 1902, played 1933-1934, d. 1975-06-08

Pete Coachman CAL b. 1961, played 1990

Damion Easley CAL b. 1969, played 1992-1996, All-Star: 1998. Not quite a Mike Piazza haul, but when you get a useful player out of the 30th round, it's eyebrow-raising. The utility infielder (mostly a second baseman through the latter part of his career) had a good first couple of years with the Halos, but slumped the next two and most of a third due to persistent injuries. Finally, on July 31, 1996, the Angels traded him to the Tigers for starter Greg Gohr. Gohr, in turn, was also easily injured, and in fact retired after winning one game for the Angels.

Ryan Hancock CAL b. 1971, played 1996

Rabbit Maranville BRO b. 1891, played 1926, Hall of Fame: 1954 (BBWAA), d. 1954-01-05. The player David Eckstein wishes he were. A 5'5" shortstop who weighed in at 155 lbs. — or less — Maranville was a remarkably consistent player, noted for his eccentricity and trouble with the bottle. Spending most of his career with the Braves and Pirates, he spent time with the Dodgers during a downward tumble with alcoholism, one that a stint with the Cardinals eventually corrected. He owns or is in the top five for a number of major league records, including most at-bats in a single season without hitting a home run (672, 1st) and career putouts (5,139, also 1st).

Noe Munoz LAN b. 1967, played 1995

Cory Snyder LAN b. 1962, played 1993-1994

George Treadway BRO b. 1866, played 1894-1895, d. 1928-11-05

Today

Bruce Bochte CAL b. 1950, played 1974-1977, All-Star: 1979. Another weak-hitting first baseman; the Angels got rid of him for someone they did need, pitcher Dave LaRoche and nonentity Dave Schuler.

Red Evans BRO b. 1906, played 1939, d. 1982-06-14

Greg Gagne LAN b. 1961, played 1996-1997

Donnie Hill CAL b. 1960, played 1990-1991

Jack Ryan BRO b. 1868, played 1898, d. 1952-08-21

Comments:
What exactly do you want from a first baseman besides SLG, Matt?

Maybe it's just me, but I think Kotchman will outdo all of those guys you just listed.
