Report: Angels Bid Soriano To $80M/6 Years

The Angels have apparently lost the bidding for presumed Japanese ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, but are believed to have offered Alfonso Soriano $80M/6 years according to the Times. Man, that's a lot of time.

Comments:
Well, that's insane. The scary thing is, that might not be the best offer he gets! I could see Soriano being a burden for almost half of that contract. Nevertheless, he'd seem to be the best player available who won't cost anything but money this offseason.

Why must reporters even waste print with mindless speculation like Soriano playing second base, moving Kendrick to first. Mike DiGiovanna seems to be a pretty credible reporter most of the time, but anyone who has followed baseball over the last decade knows how awful Soriano was at 2nd, and no team in their right mind is going to stick him there. I really, really hope somebody outbids the Angels for Soriano. As a complementary player, a guy who bats sixth your lineup, I can live with him. But to be a big run producer in the middle of the lineup? Um, no. I think he'll disappoint alot of people with his strikeouts and complete lack of dicipline. Picture Vlad with more K's and a much lower batting average. Yeah, he steals bases, but if he's only on base 32% of the time it won't amount to a whole lot. The fact that Mr. Stoneman is throwing all this money towards players like this is further proof that he has a completely misguided offensive philosophy and its likely to cripple the team again next year. Don't get me wrong. I'm not here touting OBP over all else, but wouldn't it be nice if just once this team coveted a player that draws a walk here and there? Wouldn't a roster best be constructed with several players who can bring something different to the table? Perhaps I'm the one that's misguided. Am I missing something here?

Upon actually reading the article, it sounds more like random speculation as to where Soriano would play. He also mentions CF as a possibility. This is just Mike DiGi trying to fill up a certain number of column inches.

On the other point, no, you're not misguided in thinking that the Angels would be better off inking someone who gets on base more often than Soriano; however, that player doesn't seem to exist in this free agent market, unless you're advocating J.D. Drew instead of Soriano. All things considered, I think I'd rather take my chances with Soriano in CF than Drew, if for no other reason than I'd expect Soriano to be healthier and therefore ultimately more productive.

For some reason, the system omitted my name from the previous post (even though I typed it in). It was by me, Matthew.
