Today's Birthdays
Steve Bilko LAA,LAN b. 1928, played 1958, 1961-1962, d. 1978-03-07. One of the greatest players in the old PCL Los Angeles Angels' roster, he didn't impress the Cards much, and eventually had his contract purchased by the Cubs, who released him shortly thereafter. Moving to the PCL, he proceeded to tear up the league, and after three years of this, Cincinnati, the new Los Angeles Dodgers, and Detroit all gave him contracts, but he was successful with none of them. In 1961, he became an original Angel, where he had arguably the two best — and last — seasons of his career.
Moose Clabaugh BRO b. 1901, played 1926, d. 1984-07-11. How cruel are minor league batting statistics! Clabaugh played but little in the majors and had a 14 at-bat career; in the minors, he was a god, hitting 62 homers in a single season for Tyler, Texas, then in a low minor league. He owned five minor league batting titles and a career .339 average in the minors as well. With Zach Wheat in his last year as a Robin, you'd think there would have been room for a more extensive tryout. No such luck.
Larry Harlow CAL b. 1951, played 1979-1981
Alex Kampouris BRO b. 1912, played 1941-1943, d. 1993-05-29
Steve Lembo BRO b. 1926, played 1950, 1952, d. 1989-12-04
Wes Parker LAN b. 1939, played 1964-1972
Dan Petry CAL b. 1958, played 1988-1989, All-Star: 1985. Basically a fifth starter for the 1988 and 1989 Angels, he was the Tigers' number two man in their 1984 title run. For the Angels, he'll probably be best remembered as the man for whom Top 100 Angel Gary Pettis was traded.
