Update: Pads' Managerial And Coaching Staff
Weird coupla stories out of Gaslamp Ball, the first being this one about pitching coach Darren Balsley and Sandy Alderson's "surprise" that Balsley would hire a representative to negotiate for him.
However, General Manager Kevin Towers yesterday expressed displeasure that Balsley has retained an agent, described by Balsley as an adviser. “It was a surprise to me (that Balsley had retained an agent),” Towers said. “I was literally shocked.”I thought it was common practice for at least managers to have their own representative. The other story was recent Gold Glove recipient Mike Cameron actively stumping for Dusty Baker as the team's new manager:Towers said Balsley's representative, Geoff Metzger, telephoned in mid-October.
“When I returned the phone call, I just basically said, 'I don't deal with agents with my employees (other than a player's agent). We won't be talking anymore,' ” Towers said.
"This is my opportunity to vouch for Dusty Baker," an excited Cameron told San Diego reporters. "I'm vouching for him. I've always loved Dusty Baker, been a big Dusty Baker fan."... even though he's never played for the team. Local pundit Tim Sullivan in the Union-Tribune thinks Trey Hillman has the leverage but Dusty Baker will ultimately get the job.
