Rosenthal: Angels Ink Hillenbrand

Go out to dinner and look what happens. (Also via MLB.com and the Times.) $6M and one year with a $500,000 buyout on a vesting club option. It's a lot less awful than it could be, I guess, but Hillenbrand really provides insurance for Kotchman and McPherson, and maybe a platoon partner for one or both of the above; hopefully the Angels don't need it. Realistically, he's a first-half DH, and hopefully the Angels have him fighting with Dallas and Casey for playing time, rather than being slated for a starting slot.

Comments:
I sort of doubt that happens; it seems that John Gibbons is uniquely a jerk. But that said, Hillenbrand isn't exactly a saint himself, and he appears, from the outside, as the sort to complain about playing time despite his own poor play, i.e., Steve Finley II.

this signing ain't no good, even with Rivera's injury. Shea's a hack who just doesn't stick with one team very long for one reason - his ability to hit is over-rated - he has hit in hitters parks too but stilll doesn't hit enough.

we'd be better off giving at bats to the kids. or i'd rather have Speizio.

Mr. Tanner: managers who assault their players are jerks, period.
