Broad, Chandlers Bid For Control Of Tribune Corp.
Two groups, one by Los Angeles billionaires Eli Broad and Ron Burkle, and the other led by the Chandler family, have bid on the Tribune Corp.. The Chandlers are the former publishers of the Los Angeles Times, and are the largest shareholders in the Tribune Corp. The bidding is on the entire package of holdings, including the Chicago Cubs; the Chandler family has offered a 4.5% premium for the company, at $31.70 a share, while the Broad/Burkle offer is for substantially more than that, a 12% premium at $34 a share, or total offers of $7.6 and $8.2 billion, respectively.
