Chris Constancio's List Of Top Young Catchers

Chris Constancio at Hardball Times has an interesting list of young catchers near or at their primes; included there is the Dodgers' own Russ Martin, and the Angels' Hank Conger and Jeff Mathis (but not Mike Napoli, interestingly).

Comments:
Napoli missed the age cutoff.

Right.

I hadn't looked at Napoli's stats for awhile. Since the batting average bottomed out, I guess I had a tendency to shrug a bit. But then you consider: 16 HRs, 42 RBIs and 47 runs in 268 ABs...while being an impressive defender and maintaining a .360 OBP.

It's nothing to shrug at, even if pitchers made adjustments after the ASB. The second half was unlikely entirely predictive of future trends. If we could find a consistent player somewhere between Nap's peaks and valleys, you're still looking at getting 20+ HRs/75 RBIs from a good defensive catcher over 450 ABs.

Call me a pessimist, then; his ability to clout is dependent on his ability to make adjustments, and I haven't really seen a lot of those.
