Dodgers Sew Up Tsao
Steve Henson in the Times reports that the Dodgers have arrived at a contract with Chin-Hui Tsao, a former top prospect in the Rockies organization before injuries derailed his career. He must get a tourist visa and pass a physical; he'll receive $420,000 if he makes the Dodgers and less if he doesn't.
Tsao, 25, had surgery to repair a torn labrum in May 2005, however, and hasn't pitched in a game since. He also had elbow ligament replacement surgery in 2001 and has had biceps tendon and hamstring problems. He had been the Rockies' top prospect for several years before injuries knocked him out of the running. The Dodgers believe he is worth signing because he is relatively young and appears to have recovered from his shoulder surgery. Tsao hit 94 mph pitching in front of scouts this winter and several teams bid for his services after the Rockies declined to offer him a contract.
Comments:
yeah, i didn't realize that it was a labrum tear. i thought that was supposed to be a career-ender, especially for pitchers, no? they didn't really have a good way to fix it. did medical science somehow come up with a new surgical repair for the labrum that i didn't hear about? apparently tsao is throwing in the mid-90s again...
From what I understand, we know more about the labrum than we did a decade ago, but it's still the most serious injury pitchers can commonly get. If you didn't read it, Jon's post about Shawn Green has a number of good links to how all the pieces fit together.
