Mid-Day Roster Notes
- Francisco Rodriguez and Scott Shields have signed one-year contracts with the Angels. Rodriguez's deal is worth $7M according to the AP; Shields will get $3.4M. The Angels had been hoping to sign the pair to long-term deals.
- Robb Quinlan also signed a two-year deal worth $1.85M, with up to $450,000 in performance incentives.
- The Chisox signed Joe Crede to a one-year, $4.94M deal, thus putting the kibosh on any Figgins/Crede trade rumors.
- Joe Kennedy has re-signed with the A's, for one year and $2.8M.
- Also, Oakland signed one-year deals for each of OF Milton Bradley, reliever Kiko Calero, and INF Marco Scutaro, all arbitration-eligible.
- Update: Beane shakes off that hangover, declares the A's uninterested in Darin Erstad. Maybe he figured the Angels would pick him up...
- The Rangers have offered Sammy Sosa a minor league deal according to Ken Rosenthal.
- Update 2: Robothal, again, comes to us with this tidbit about a possible Blue Jays/Dodgers trade:
[The Blue Jays are] a club that tried to sign both free-agent righty Gil Meche and lefty Ted Lilly and landed neither. Free-agent right-hander John Thomson isn't the answer, not when oft-injured A.J. Burnett is the No. 2 starter and dubious lefty Gustavo Chacin, who pitched only 871/3 innings last season, is the No. 3. Thus, the Jays are targeting Wells, who is far more likely to sign with the Padres.
A trade remains possible; the Jays, according to major-league sources, failed in attempts to move outfielder Alex Rios to the Phillies for righty Brett Myers and to the Dodgers for righty Chad Billingsley and a second piece, most likely outfielder Matt Kemp or righty Jonathan Broxton. They need to keep pushing for such a deal; in the A.L. East, young righties such as Shaun Marcum and Casey Janssen can be asked to do only so much.
Comments:
I don't know that I would say that avoiding arbitration with Joe Crede sends the signal that he is no longer available in the right deal. I am still hopeful that a bat is on the horizon, but my hope fades a little more each day. :(
