Today's Birthdays
Chuck Cottier CAL b. 1936, played 1968-1969. A starting second baseman for the old Milwaukee Braves, and later, the Tigers and Senators, he was basically done as a player after his poor 1963 season, but held on through 1969 anyway. He managed the Mariners through parts of three seasons (1984-1986); the M's had yet to have even one winning season, and their first wouldn't be until the 83-79 1991 club, managed by former Dodger Jim Lefebvre (q.v.). After a disastrous 64-98 1992 season led by Bill Plummer, the M's hired "Sweet" Lou Piniella, starting their runs of great Mariners teams.
Chauncey Fisher BRO b. 1872, played 1897, d. 1939-04-27
Craig Gerber CAL b. 1959, played 1985
Brian Johnson LAN b. 1968, played 2001
Dave Matranga LAA b. 1977, played 2005. An Orange native who played at Pepperdine, he appears to have been out of baseball over the last year, but his ESPN page is decked out in Rangers garb, so perhaps they know something I don't.
Derek Thompson LAN b. 1981, played 2005. When it's working, the 2000 first-rounder has a great 12-6 curveball; too bad about his control. A Tommy John surgery kept him off the field in 2006, but the A's signed him to a minor league deal, so I might get to see him in spring training this year.
