Pickoff Moves

Today's Birthdays

Nobody of significance...

Boyd Bartley BRO b. 1920, played 1943

Todd Benzinger LAN b. 1963, played 1992

Sammy Ellis CAL b. 1941, played 1968, All-Star: 1965

Willie Smith LAA,CAL b. 1939, played 1964-1966, d. 2006-01-16. One of the last pitcher-outfielders to reach the majors, "Wonderful Willie" Smith was also an amateur boxer. He had one really good year as a pitcher for the 1964 Angels and wasn't used on the mound again until 1968, with the Cubs. He also spent a couple years in the Japanese Leagues.

Dodgers Win Beimel Arbitration Case

Loser gets $912,500 salary. I really like the fact that there are some teams (the Astros) that haven't been to arbitration for years. It's a really ugly process.

Bartolo Colon Wants To Open The Season

He's not kidding, either. Maybe he should ask for a pony while he's at it.

And Arte Really Likes Bill, Still

In that same article:
"One way or another, Stoneman will be with us next year," Moreno said, adding, "He knows this organization better than anyone."

Who will determine Stoneman's job title?

"It will be both of our choices, but probably his," Moreno said. "I like Bill a lot."

Moreno defended Stoneman against those claiming he can't pull the trigger on a deal.

"We had one deal before the deadline last July that was made," Moreno said, alluding to a trade that would have netted Baltimore slugger Miguel Tejada.

"We gave them everything they wanted, and their owner nixed the deal. So when people say Stoneman hasn't accomplished something, they don't have any idea of the time, effort and research he puts in."

Garret Anderson, Angel Embodyer

Heh:
Who embodies the Angels?

"Now, Garret Anderson," Figgins said. "Because he wants to win. He'll give himself up, even though he's one of the main guys in the lineup. He will give himself up to help the team win. If Vladdy hits a double, he'll hit a ground ball to second to get him over for [Shea] Hillenbrand and whoever's hitting behind him. That solidifies why [the Angels] been a consistent, winning program. Because we do anything it takes to win."

The scary thing is, I think he might be right.

Dodgers "Talking To Everyone" About New Radio Deal

You don't miss the fetid, cryptosporidium-laced water...
The Dodgers are discussing a new broadcasting contract with KFWB-AM (980) as its current five-year deal with the station ends after this season, but the team could end up choosing another flagship.

"They're talking to everyone," said KLAC-AM (570) general manager Don Martin, adding that at least five stations were talking to the Dodgers. "We're interested. Who wouldn't be?"

Marty Greenspun, the team's executive vice president and chief operating officer, declined comment through a spokesman.

KFWB is a terrible choice for a sports broadcast; those who like it for news will find themselved frustrated waiting for the next traffic report, and the signal isn't especially strong, either. But imagine the Dodgers going to a worse station, forcing fans in outlying areas to rely on XM, just like the Cards did when they left KMOX.

Comments:
I couldn't agree with you more. I live in Corona and the signal is very weak here. Also, because it is not a sports station, there is a limited amount of sports talk before and after the game. Too bad I can't stomach the Angels.
