Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Omar Daal LAN b. 1972, played 1993-1995, 2002. In 2002, the Dodgers had Kevin Brown (mostly injured, and ineffective when he wasn't), Darren Dreifort (also injured), and Andy Ashby (playing out the last vaguely acceptable season of his career) as either actual or theoretical starting pitchers. Daal was a one-year signing by Dan Evans at the price of $5M for 161 innings of mediocrity. Gil Meche got $55M for five years going into his ages 28-32 seasons; inflation's winning.
Bob Davis CAL b. 1952, played 1981
Bert Hamric BRO b. 1928, played 1955, d. 1984-08-08
Johnny Ray CAL b. 1957, played 1987-1990, All-Star: 1988. I hear he sounded sad upon the radio.
Rich Rodriguez ANA b. 1963, played 2003
Tim Thompson BRO b. 1924, played 1954
Bullety Stuff
- Oh, no, Ervin Santana's got a bloody nose! Look out for the Brendan Donnelly curse!
- "At the appropriate time, I will address the matter," says Gary Matthews, Jr. about reports he received HGH shipments from an Internet pharmacy. Major league officials may not be able to suspend him because the substance was not illegal at the time he took it, though it is banned now.
- Exhibition games start today for the Angels, with Ervin Santana toeing the rubber against the Royals. Joe Saunders will start on Friday against the Cubs, and John Lackey will get the start Saturday versus the Rockies. Sunday will feature Kelvim Escobar against the Brewers.
- Speaking of Escobar, his knee feels just fine.
- Marlon Anderson was held out of a game because of pain in his right elbow; he had surgery in October to remove bone chips.
- Why do we want Tommy Lasorda's denial about his alleged involvement in a prostitution ring to be true? It's so we can get those awful visuals out of our heads... those poor girls...
- Jeff Weaver is "starting all over, from the ground up" with the M's. Sounds familiar...
- The Giants are near to signing Matt Cain to a four-year deal, buying out his arbitration years.
