More Bullets
- If It Means Higher OBP, I'm All For It: Mike Scioscia's noticed Brandon Wood has a certain air about him:
"He's walking around like he belongs," Scioscia said of the player rated the Angels' No. 1 prospect by Baseball America. "He's walking with a lot of confidence."
Brandon Wood, walking? Well, hot damn, that's a positive development... joking aside, he's only struck out twice in 14 at bats. That's progress, or something. - The Angels have "no idea whether center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. will be on the opening-day roster"? Oh, that's hilarious. Of course he will be. Running Erick Aybar out in center is just a ruse.
"We're not particularly targeting center field externally," Scioscia said, "but you're always looking."
- Jeff Mathis is probably back to Salt Lake, barring a late miracle. Oh, wait, you say he homered twice in yesterday's 11-4 Royals rout? Somebody's been praying to St. Jude... or eating his Wheaties ... or something...
- Jered Weaver's not taking alma mater CSULB seriously to win it all in his NCAA pools... he's only filling out one in four that way.
- Terry Evans was demoted to minor league camp, as was Steven Shell, Jose Arredondo, Mike Eylward, Sean Rodriguez, Hainley Statia, and Aaron Peel.
- Bret Tomko may be on his way to a place in the rotation again.
- Rafael Furcal will make his first appearance today in three weeks, as will Marlon Anderson on Thursday night.
- Hong-Chih Kuo likely won't face disciplinary charges as a result of his positive drug test while pitching for Team Taiwan.
- Eric Gagne claims he feels as good as he did three years ago, pitching without arm pain.
- 1996 NLCS MVP Javy Lopez was released by the Rockies, who had given him a non-guaranteed deal.
- Greg Maddux had an abdominal strain, and was scratched from a spring training start.
- So badly has Mark Prior's spring training gone that he's now considered a dark horse to win the fifth starter slot on the Cubs' rotation. Ouch.
- Bobby Crosby seems to be feeling better, playing in a simulated game.
- Mark Teixeira has been sidelined for the rest of the week with a sore knee.
