Sapphire Bullets Of Pure Love
- Mike Napoli got some extra at-bats in minor league games on Sunday. His new approach?
"Don't waste at-bats, make adjustments, don't get away from the things I do, like use the whole field," Napoli said. "Be disciplined, go up there with a plan, know what the pitchers are trying to do to me, and instead of worrying about struggling, that I've got to do this or that, just have fun."
And Mickey Hatcher says the W word again:"He's not going to be a .300 hitter," Hatcher said, "but if we get the walks and the home runs out of him, he's going to be great."
Napoli is batting .407 in 11 spring training games this year. - Hector Carrasco will start Friday, and it looks like with Kelvim Escobar at least temporarily out of the rotation, Dustin Moseley will be the fifth man in the rotation. That's the kind of depth you don't want to be using.
- I see that Kendry Morales clouted his first homer in yesterday's 3-2 win over the Cubs. Erstwhile staff ace Kerry Wood had entered the game in relief, and according to Al,
BCB reader bleacher came out to the berm to tell us he'd been watching the scouts' radar guns on Wood, and unlike Friday's appearance, when his velocity was good, Wood peaked at 88 this afternoon, and the pitch to Morales was only 82 MPH.
It now appears there's a reason for that, as Wood will start the year on the DL. - Somebody needs to tell the Register that it really sucks when I have to find their stories online syndicated in some other newspaper's website. For instance, this Bill Plunkett story about Gary Matthews, Jr. Where is it on the Register's sports page? Or their Angels page? You're creating the content, guys ... at least try to display it on your own website...
- Brett Tomko is in the Dodgers' rotation. Well, don't everybody get excited all at once now. He's made a charcoal drawing of Jackie Robinson that will be distributed on Jackie Robinson Day at the park, April 15.
- Matt Kemp is worried about getting sent down to the minors because of Larry Bigbie's performance.
- Kuo, not so silent:
Lamenting that young players often are hesitant to disclose injuries when they are battling to make the team, Little had said Kuo hadn't mentioned the pain until after his next start, March 21 against the New York Mets.
"After the Boston game, I told the trainers that it hurt a little bit," Kuo said. "But it felt fine leading up to the Mets' game, so I pitched."
After talking with trainers, Little said Kuo was correct.
