Things To Chew On Before Going To Bed
- If Eric Gagne had his best bullpen session in two years, why is Ron Washington keeping him from pitching against AL teams during spring training?
- The ever-reliable, east-coast New York Daily News is reporting that the Angels are considering voiding Gary Matthews, Jr.'s contract following the HGH hoo-ha. Murray Chass has a piece about this in the New York Times, which is basically a repeat of what the local flavor had to say earlier in the week. Speaking of the LA Times, word is the Angels are going to go after Matthews to make him say something — anything — about the matter before opening day. Or else...?
The Angels and Major League Baseball officials have discussed at least four possibilities — suspending him with pay, suspending him without pay, converting his guaranteed contract to non-guaranteed and voiding the contract. He signed a five-year, $50-million contract in November.
If the Angels take any such action, they expect a challenge from the union. They already have been advised that they probably could not succeed in voiding the contract unless Matthews were convicted of a crime. He has not been charged.
- Brandon Wood sprained his ankle and won't be playing for a few days.
- Jered Weaver should be back on the mound Friday, but will certainly miss regular season games.
- Mark Kotsay will miss 8-to-12 weeks due to a herniated disc.
