Minor League Scorebook
News
A long post today... hang tight ...- Since I was pressed for time yesterday and Thursday, I didn't get any commentary on Thursday's games. One thing I missed was that Thursday's Bees game saw Brandon Wood's 500th professional hit, an RBI single.
- Stephen Smith passes on the rumor that the Nashville PCL franchise may be looking to move to the West Coast, possibly Southern California.
- Sports agent Gustavo Dominguez was convicted of smuggling Cuban baseball players to the United States, transporting them to California and harboring them for profit.
A South Florida jury also found Dominguez, 48, guilty of conspiracy, leaving the former Cal State Northridge pitcher facing the possibility of decades in federal prison. However, prosecutors suggested Dominguez, who remains free on a $25,000 bond, is likely to get a penalty closer to five years when he is sentenced July 9.
Kendry Morales and Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt were brought to the U.S. by smugglers. No case had ever been made linking an agent with smuggling until Dominguez's October grand jury indictment. - Since I missed the game recaps yesterday, the Travs lost their inaugural home opener 6-5 at Dickey-Stephens Thursday that featured a surprisingly solid performance by another guy I moved off the watchlist, Daniel Davidson. In what seems to be an archetype for Angels pitching lately, he's not getting so many strikeouts but he does get balls to well-placed gloves, facing two over the minimum through six. The Travs' bullpen failed to hold a 1-0 lead in the eighth.
- BA came out with their post-spring-training minor league transaction report on Thursday, something I also didn't have time to add to Thursday's Scorebook post. Here they are for both teams:
Los Angeles Angels
And still no mention of Gustavo Espinoza. Frankly, this is getting a little worrisome.

- Speaking of minor league stransactions, I ask now a plaintive question: where the hell is Mike Emeigh? His minor league transactions were both more comprehensive and timely than those at even Baseball America, which says a lot. Hurry back from that life-changing thingy, Mike, whatever it was.
Scores
Wood: 0-2, 2 BB
Morales: 0-2
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 K
Evans: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Liriano: (L, 0-2), 3.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 9.00 ERA
Salt Lake lost their first road game of the year in this one, with Kendry Morales getting yanked in the fifth for reasons unknown. There's always speculation whenever a top prospect gets pulled mid-game; perhaps the Angels have decided to pull the plug on Hillenbrand and finally place him on the DL with his groin strain.
Terry Evans' multi-hit day included a solo homer, the Bees' only run of the game. The contest also featured a good performance by Steven Shell, whose name fell off the watchlist this year. He's been converted to relief, and according to Stephen Smith, he lit up the gun in the high 80's/low 90's, and pitched from the stretch exclusively over four innings.
Wipke: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
Thomas: (L, 0-1), 3.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 5 BB, 12.00 ERA
Eric Thomas used to be in the Milwaukee system, and I assume the fact that he was an 11th-rounder in 2001 means he's now Cal League filler. He got shelled in this game, characteristic of his career to date, politely giving back the three runs in the bottom of the same first inning his offense got him their three. San Jose kept putting up ones, and that was the ballgame.
Trumbo: 0-4, 3 K
Conger: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Perez: 0-4, 4 K
Phillips: 0-3, 2 K
Mount: 1-3
Smith: 2-3, 1 RBI
Schoeninger: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 1.50 ERA
Madrigal: (H, 1), 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 7.71 ERA
23rd round pick Tim Schoeninger has had a nice but very brief professional career predicated on the idea that he can get hitters to tap the ball at a glove somewhere, but tonight he got seven strikeouts in six innings in his first game of the season. Warner Madrigal got a hold despite giving up a run pitching one inning; Hank Conger drove in one with a 1-3 day that included a walk, and left fielder Stantrel Smith drove in a run with a 2-3 day. Mark Trumbo ... well, he just keeps on swinging and missing. Sheesh.
Wisconsin has yet to post a win this season.
Loney: 1-4, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 K
LaRoche: 0-4
Young: 1-4
Freeman: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Perez: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Mays: (W, 1-1), 7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 2.25 ERA
Hull: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 2.25 ERA
Joe Mays got through seven innings of one-run ball while managing to strike out only one batter — not a good sign. James Loney's bases-loaded triple in the second ended the scoring in five-run second inning, and in the game generally. The 51's have not lost a game since they dropped a game on Saturday, to the Bees.
Paul: 0-4, 2 K
Dunlap: 1-4, 1 K
Raglani: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Ojeda: (L, 0-1), 4.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 6.00 ERA
LaMura: 2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 8.10 ERA
Wright: 2.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA
The Diamond Jaxx put a three on the board in the third and never looked back, as new Mariners affiliate West Tennessee beat the Suns 5-3. Wesley Wright pitched two and two-thirds strong innings of relief, striking out five and walking two, including the first batter he faced, Ronnie Prettyman. I wonder if they're still playing "I Feel Pretty" when he comes up to bat in opposition ballparks.
Dewitt: 1-5, 1 RBI
May: 0-2, 2 BB
Guerra: 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 7.11 ERA
Alvarez: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 7.88 ERA
Leach: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
The hitters didn't but the pitcher (Brent Leach) did; the 66ers posted five in the bottom of the second, but Lancaster came back to tie things in the fifth and take the lead in the sixth. Leach was the only Inland Empire pitcher to leave the game with an ERA under 7.00.
Bell: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Santana: 0-2, 2 BB
Johnson: (L, 0-1), 2.0 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 7.50 ERA
Felix: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Sanfler: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA
White, G: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA

By the way, John Sickels has posted a "prospect smackdown" featuring Brandon Wood and Ryan Braun. Good reading for those interested in Wood.
