His start was so encouraging, Angels brass are mooting the prospect of him returning to the rotation on Saturday, against the Mariners. The bad news was that he only struck out three, though he walked only one.

Brandon Wood got going after a rough start, knocking out a pair of doubles, and Terry Evans continues to hit and hit and hit. I have this great fear that he will become a preachier version of Tim Salmon, but if he's got prodigious power, I promise not to complain too much. Only Chris Resop had a really bad night, giving up a pair of runs, both earned, on two hits and a walk. I sure hope something's wrong with him physically, because it would be awful to have those kinds of bad numbers and be healthy.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I recall reading in the offseason that he attributed his improved offense to Jesus, instead of laying off the outside slider, standing back in the box, etc.
A batting coach named Jesus? I don't believe it. Latin players players swing at everything. You can't walk off the island.

Other than making the obvious point that maybe, just maybe, Jesus actually told him to lay off the outside slider, etc. (Jesus could probably be a great batting coach), is there a problem with him being a Tim Salmon-type player, "preachy" or not?
Yeah, that was kinda my point; I'll swallow my native antinomianism and grit my teeth during postgame interviews if he's good for 30 dingers a year.
Ah, here's the piece I was looking for ($?):
Evans batted .311/.373/.550 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs in 238 at-bats at Palm Beach, then proceeded to hit four more homers in his first three games at Double-A Springfield. In 75 at-bats overall for Springfield, Evans batted .307/.369/.640.
Not bad for a guy who spent all of 2003 and the majority of 2004 at low Class A Peoria before finally being promoted to Palm Beach--where he stayed until his power emerged this year. It may be surprising to learn that Evans hasn't made any major changes to his overall approach.
"Out of nowhere, I guess," Evans said. "I really haven't changed anything in my approach physically, it's more about being calm and relaxed and my faith in God has really allowed me to do that. I know you get a lot of athletes saying similar things, but it was like turning a switch. There isn't pressure anymore and that's the best feeling in the world.
"I know people probably get tired about athletes thanking God for their successes, but in my case it's absolutely true. I don't have that frustration anymore when I go 0-for-4. I just move on to the next day and I'm not pressing like I used to when things weren't going well."

What he said is a hell of a lot more mild than what I expected when you said he is "preachy." I mean, he is not saying that God gave him these abilities or that God is allowing him to hit home runs, but that his faith in God allows him to let go of his bad at bats (you could say that his faith in God has led to a more optimistic outlook). So, in that sense, God is absolutely responsible for his change, not because God is making a slider hang or whispering to Evans to lay off the curveball in the dirt, but because when Evans misses that hanging slider or swings at the curveball in the dirt, he realizes it is not the end of the world. If any player is going to talk about his faith helping him, isn't that the way to do it?
