Minor League Scorebook

News

Stephen Marek has joined the Quakes from a rehab stint at extended spring training.
"If you look at the numbers, they are probably on par with [Nick] Adenhart's," Angels Director of Player Development Tony Reagins said prior to the season. "He's got a mid-90s fastball, a good breaking ball and he's a hard worker. I really like him. He competes and he gets after it. He's a guy you probably don't hear a lot about, but he has a tremendous upside. He can be interesting."
He'll make his first start on Thursday.

Scores

2007-04-17: Salt Lake 11, Tucson 6 #
Mathis: 2-5, 1 2B
Wood: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Evans: 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Morales: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI
Eylward: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Smith, C: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Bonilla: (W, 2-0), 5.0 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.80 ERA
I was scratching my chin a little yesterday when I saw Terry Evans batting leadoff and playing centerfield, but as it turned out, he's done that from time to time, but mostly he's played in right. He had a nice game tonight, driving in a couple, but Kendry Morales earns "Star of the Game" with his 3-5 effort that included a home run, his first of the young season. Jeff Mathis even went 2-5 batting from the number two hole, and Brandon Wood went 2-4 with a double and scored a pair batting third.
2007-04-17: Midland 2, Arkansas 0 #
Collins: 0-3, 1 K
Peel, A: 2-4, 2 2B
Wilson: 1-4, 1 K
Sandoval, F: 2-4, 1 K
Davidson: (L, 0-2), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 2.81 ERA
Rodriguez, R: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1.23 ERA
Arredondo: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 2.45 ERA
Another good outing by Daniel Davidson, but the bats couldn't figure out Kazuhito Tadano, who combined with two relievers to pitch an eight-hit shutout of the Travs.
2007-04-17: Rancho Cucamonga 6, Lake Elsinore 7 #
Coon: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Statia: 4-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI
Morris: 2-4, 1 K
Ortega: (L, 1-1), 3.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 4 BB, 1 HR, 3.21 ERA
Mattison: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 4 BB, 1.80 ERA
A two-out, two-run rally in the top of the ninth made it close for the Quakes, but it wasn't enough. Quakes pitchers walked eight in the contest. Blecch.
2007-04-17: Cedar Rapids 6, South Bend 5 #
Bourjos: 3-6, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Pettit: 2-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Conger: 1-5
Mount: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K
O'Sullivan: 6.0 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2.25 ERA
Browning: (H, 2), 0.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 7.71 ERA
Brandt: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Madrigal: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.15 ERA
Peter Bourjos had a great game in this 11-inning contest, going 3-6 with a homer and a pair of RBIs. Sean O'Sullivan pitched a fine game, but Jorge Perez, brought in to save a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, allowed a solo homer to Brad Miller, thus setting up extra innings. Ryan Mount doubled, and then after a walk to Stantrel Smith, Wilberto Ortiz smacked a line-drive double to plate Mount. Warner Madrigal got the save, his first of the season, recovering from a Wilberto Ortiz error that allowed Joey Side to reach with one out.

2007-04-17: AZL Angels did not play
2007-04-17: Colorado Springs 0, Las Vegas 5 #
Abreu: 0-3, 1 BB
Loney: 1-4, 1 K
LaRoche: 2-3, 1 BB
Freeman: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Stinnett: 2-3
Houlton: (W, 2-0), 7.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 1.62 ERA
White: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0.96 ERA
Another of Houlton's on-again, off-again magical days where he can tease strikeouts from thin air... which is good, because there are a lot of thin air parks in the PCL. I assume by his line — seven scoreless innings and seven strikeouts with only one walk and three hits — that his curveball was working. Choo Freeman had a three-run homer to provide most of the 51's offense, while Kelly Stinnett went 2-3, and Andy LaRoche did the same while scoring two runs. Matt White finished the game and completed the three-hit shutout.
2007-04-17: Jacksonville 2, Huntsville 10 #
Hu, C: 0-4, 1 RBI
Paul: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Dunlap: 1-4, 1 K
Raglani: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 K
Juarez: (L, 2-1), 4.0 IP, 10 R, 10 ER, 10 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 2 HR, 5.00 ERA
Akin: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4.70 ERA
Wright: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Last year, these were all going the other way... William Juarez got shelled for ten earned runs, including a grand slam by Brendan Katin, before he got pulled. Chin-Lung Hu and Marshall McDougall each drove in a run; Wesley Wright struck out the side in the eighth.
2007-04-17: High Desert 6, Inland Empire 5 #
Rogowski: 3-5, 1 RBI
De Jesus: 0-3
Dewitt: 0-4
Brazoban: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Castillo, J: (L, 0-3) (in relief), 5.0 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 7.62 ERA
Ah, the return of Yhency Brazoban. He was actually pretty effective, starting the game in the first and retiring all the batters he faced. Inland Empire trailed all the way, though they did make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth by scoring a pair and threatening to tie it with two outs; but then Ryan Rogowski grounded out to second to end the threat.
2007-04-17: Peoria 4, Great Lakes 2 #
Bell: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Santana: 0-4, 1 K
Wall: (L, 0-2), 4.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 7.04 ERA
Sanfler: 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 1.08 ERA
Great Lakes is now 4-7 on the young season, and it would seem the pitching is the problem. Josh Bell tried, plating Bridger Hunt on an RBI single in the bottom of the third, but there's only so much one hitter can do.
