The Cleveland Indians Of Milwaukee

So the tripartite name chatter has already started. Apparently, they've sold something like 10,000 tickets for the entire freaking series, so you can be sure the teams will be playing in a booming, echo-filled cavern. Since the Friday game against the Mariners was snowed out before it could be completed, this will, in effect, be their home opener. Ironically enough, it turns out that old County Stadium in Milwaukee was used to film Major League; supposedly, the original promotions calendar included a Rick Vaughn glasses giveaway today, but the Tribe's promotions schedule took a hatchet to that idea. Too bad.

It's Called Being An Individualist, Tony

Tony Pierce thinks Garret Anderson should shut up and conform on Jackie Robinson Day. Deadspin thinks GA's missing the point. I think they're both missing the point. This is the U.S. of A., and if GA doesn't want to engage in a silly promotion that makes a mockery of the uniform, good for him. It's not like Jackie Robinson is some obscure player who went to the grave unremembered thereafter; his number is retired throughout baseball, and he even has his own day.

A-Rod And Vlad, AL Players Of The Week

A-Rod and Vlad won AL Player of the Week honors. This is the difference between Angel fans and Yankee fans: they'll be back to booing A-Rod tomorrow.

These guys are really missing the point on GA. I think he honors Robinson by not caving in to "the man" for purposes of a publicity stunt.

Robinson went his own way on a lot of things; he was a Goldwater Republican, for one thing.

Is GA really trying to make a statement about not wearing no. 42???
Or is he just clueless? I guess he doesn't get the honor in wearing that number for one day and paying tribute to one of baseball's legends. I like him, but jez GA, this is Jackie Robinson we're talking about.

I am sure GA respects what Jackie Robinson did (as a matter of fact, I bet ALL baseball players do nowadays). But it does seem like a pretty freaking silly promotion to alter uniforms like this. It's like baseball is trying to say: "Hey, look at us, we aren't racist. We celebrate integration." These kind of self-promotional things always grate on me. Kudos for GA not wanting to conform.

I thought Robinson was more of a Nixon/Rockefeller Republican.

My mom is buried a few plots away from Chuck Connors.

That blogpost was over-the-top. I mean, Tony Pierce is the guy who wrote a recent post on his personal blog entitled "the short list of black chicks I'd do just doubled". He's got a list? And it's short? Like less than Three Finger Brown short? And he's saving that last authorial finger to present it upright to a black man?

In the words of Samuel L Jackson: "Shiiiiiiiiiit..."
