Scores

2007-05-07: Salt Lake 4, Tacoma 2 #
Haynes: 2-4, 1 RBI
Evans: 2-5, 1 2B
Mathis: 1-4
Eylward: 2-4, 1 2B
Gorneault: 0-4, 1 K
Brown: 1-2, 2 BB
Smith, Ca: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Budde: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Olenberger: (W, 4-1), 8.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.72 ERA
Salt Lake led all the way, and it was smooth sailing except for a two-run outburst in the bottom of the ninth; no Rainier baserunner got past second base through the first seven innings. Kasey Olenberger retired the side in order four times, surrendering only a solo homer. Casey Smith, starting at shortstop, slugged a two-run jack, his first homer of the year.
2007-05-07: Arkansas 3, Springfield 4 #
Morrissey: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Sandoval, F: 0-2, 3 BB
Rodriguez, S: 0-4, 2 K
Pali: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Fuller: 1-2, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Green: (L, 2-2), 6.1 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.43 ERA
Gonzalez, M: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.12 ERA
The Travs put up a good fight in the top of the ninth by posting two and loading the bases with one out, but Curtis Pride and Greg Porter both struck out swinging to end the threat. Nick Green had one of his lesser outings, giving up an RBI double to a rehabbing Juan Encarnacion (that's pronounced "En-car-na-see-own", Charlie); Green appears to be struggling a bit so far this year. Sean Rodriguez was silenced, but Freddy Sandoval got three walks. This is not all that unusual for Sandoval, who's off to a great start atypical of Angels batters, with a .311/.411/.443 line. You've just gotta love all those free passes.

Incidentally, it's way too early to be saying this with any confidence (we should actually be looking at these numbers with at least a year's worth of data), but it appears that Dickey-Stephens is playing as a very significant pitcher's park. I calculated the park factors based on away and home performance:

+--------+--------+--------+--------+
| hr | 3b | 2b | 1b |
+--------+--------+--------+--------+
| 0.4667 | 1.0000 | 0.6087 | 0.7158 |
+--------+--------+--------+--------+
Scoring is immensely suppressed for just about everything save the triple, which is so rare as to be meaningless. If this is true, the Angels have definitely paid attention to some of the historic problems their high-run-scoring environments have caused in terms of misreading the ability of both pitchers and hitters. Travelerocity claims the park factors will reverse later in the season once the weather warms up. We'll see.
2007-05-07: Rancho Cucamonga did not play
2007-05-07: Quad Cities 4, Cedar Rapids 1 #
Bourjos: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K
Conger: 0-3
Trumbo: 1-3
Mount: 0-2
Phillips: 1-2, 1 K
Herndon: (L, 3-1), 7.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 12 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.00 ERA
A makeup double header that tagged Kenneth Herndon with his first loss of the year, coinciding with getting hit pretty hard.
2007-05-07: Quad Cities 2, Cedar Rapids 4 #
Pettit: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 K
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Conger: 0-2, 1 K
Holler: 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.50 ERA
Browning: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 3.55 ERA
Madrigal: (H, 3), 1.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.76 ERA
Hank Conger continues to really struggle for Cedar Rapids, with only one hit in his last three games (12 at-bats). Mark Trumbo, on the other hand, seems to be benefiting from his second pass in the Midwest League, and is currently in a modest six-game hitting streak, with an on-base streak (yes, he had a walk, only his third of the year, on May 1) dating back to April 28 (10 games). During his on-base streak, he's hitting .412/.500/.647, pretty impressive considering he was in danger of falling out of the prospect lists at the start of the season.

Trumbo homered in this game, a two-run shot. Four Kernels pitchers, including Barret Browning and Warner Madrigal, combined on a four-hitter to silence Quad Cities.

2007-05-07: Orem did not play
2007-05-07: AZL Angels did not play
2007-05-07: Las Vegas 3, Fresno 5 #
Abreu: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Kemp: 0-4
Jones, M: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Young: 2-4, 1 K
Garcia: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Huckaby: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Kuo: 0-2
Hoorelbeke: 0-1
Loney: 0-1, 1 K
Kuo: 4.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 4.32 ERA
Hoorelbeke: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.06 ERA
White: (L, 0-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.79 ERA
Tony Abreu, the next-next-next thing at third base for the Dodgers, batting leadoff? Just what they don't need, but he did well in this game, going 2-5. Rehabbing Ricardo Rincon got the win in the bottom of the ninth when Fresno plated two on Ivan Ochoa's two-run dinger off Matt White, collared for his second loss of the season. Hong-Chih Kuo posted four innings of less-than-wonderful work, including two home runs. James Loney entered the game as a defensive sub in a double switch in the bottom of the seventh, and had one unsuccessful at bat that ended in a strikeout.
2007-05-07: Birmingham 6, Jacksonville 3 #
Hu, C: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Gonzalez, J: 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Paul: 1-5, 2 K
Raglani: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Rohan: 0-1, 3 BB, 1 K
Orenduff, J: 4.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 3.26 ERA
Wright: (L, 1-2) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 5.30 ERA
Another last-inning meltdown by Dodgers system pitching, as Wesley Wright took his second loss of the season, this time in the ninth inning when he gave up a three-run jack to the Barons' Cory Aldridge with two outs. Chin-Lung Hu went 3-for-4 with a walk and drove in a run batting leadoff.
2007-05-07: Inland Empire did not play
2007-05-07: Beloit 0, Great Lakes 4 #
Hunt: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Lizarraga: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 K
Mattingly: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Gonzalez: 4-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
White, C: (W, 1-4), 8.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 3.38 ERA
Preston Mattingly's two-run homer in the first inning staked the Loons to a 2-0 lead, and Adolfo Gonzalez plated Eduardo Perez later in the frame to make it 3-0. The Loons added one more in the eighth on Gonzalez's leadoff homer; Gonzalez was perfect at the plate in this game, and is hitting a sure-to-get-shrunken .667/.667/1.167 in only two games this season.

Cody White pitched eight strong, scoreless innings, striking out five and walking only two for his first win of the season. It was his longest outing of the year and only his second quality start in five tries.

Mattingly has a little three-game hitting streak going; his homer today was his first extra-base hit since April 28. Interestingly, he's had at least one strikeout in every game he's played in except for two this year, and has three walks total.

2007-05-07: Ogden did not play
