Minor League Scorebook
News
Here's a nice interview with Nathan Haynes that outlines his professional history.Ten seasons in the minors and the former Texas League Player of the Week and 250 minor league steals man is glad to still be just one step away with the Bees. "It's been a long road; I've had a lot of injuries, eight surgeries. Now I'm just trying to stay as healthy as I can and put it all together. I just want to play well, keep it going, have a good season, and then hopefully make the decision to get to the big leagues an easy one for them (Angels) so I can get my opportunity." There is no doubt that Haynes would find it easy to have a good time in Anaheim.
Scores
Wood: 1-4, 1 K
Gorneault: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Mathis: 2-4, 1 K
Liriano: (L, 1-5), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 6.63 ERA
Gwyn: 2.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 1.31 ERA
Sounds starter Tim Dillard pitched a complete game against the Bees, limiting them to six hits and three runs, all earned in a three-run seventh. Dillard retired 16 consecutive batters from the second through the seventh. Even though Pedro Liriano got tagged with the loss, Marcus Gwyn gave up the game winning runs in the top of the seventh on a solo homer to Laynce Nix. Gwyn followed that with a single to Joe Dillon, and Jeff Mathis allowed a passed ball that put him at second; a Brad Nelson single cashed him in.
Mathis' defensive miscue was made up for by a multi-hit game, his first since April 26. He's started another weak hitting streak, one in each game since May 7. Terry Evans had his first game in almost a week where he didn't have a multi-hit day.
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 2B
Collins: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 K
Wipke: 2-4, 1 RBI
Pali: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Davidson: (W, 2-4), 7.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.06 ERA
Arredondo: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.94 ERA
Here we go again with the Joe Saunders comparisons... except that they're not really true. Davidson's repeating AA for the third time, and here he posted a very nice game — well, save for the absence of strikeouts. Matt Pali got his second home run of the year, driving in two for half of the Travs' offense.
It looks like Flint Wipke may be with the Travs for a while yet. Hauled up from Rancho in one of those chain reaction transactions, he replaced the promoted Ben Johnson; Johnson in turn was elevated to Salt Lake to temporarily replace the injured Ryan Budde, who hit the DL May 13. Wipke seems to be doing pretty well so far in limited service; he made his third appearance and went 2-4, 3-9 overall in the Texas League.
Toussaint: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Marek: (L, 2-2), 6.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 3.86 ERA
An awful game for Marek.
Trumbo: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Conger: 1-4, 1 2B
Mount: 1-4
Phillips: 0-4, 1 K
Schoeninger: (L, 5-2), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.81 ERA
Also not a good game for Tim Schoeninger. Clinton leadoff man Craig Gentry pasted two doubles off Schoeninger, and third baseman John Whittleman ripped a solo homer off him, too. With a 25 MPH and varying wind, it's not a surprise that Schoeninger had trouble.
Kemp: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Loney: 1-5, 1 K
Jones, M: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Young: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Maza: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Houlton: (W, 4-2), 5.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 3.67 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (H, 2), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 5.93 ERA
Brazoban: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.80 ERA
Another "on" night for D.J. Houlton's curveball, and the 51's offense did the rest, keyed by a Mitch Jones three-run jack. Every 51 had at least one hit. Yhency Brazoban pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
Paul: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Dunlap: 2-4, 1 2B
Gonzalez, J: 2-2, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Ojeda: (L, 0-3), 2.1 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 6.63 ERA
Wright: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 4.70 ERA
Xavier Paul posted his fourth homer of the year in a game marked mainly by a terrible game by starter Alvis Ojeda, who made his shortest appearance of the year. Maybe that was natural, because he was facing one of the best offensive prospects in the minors, Arizona outfielder Justin Upton, who homered in his first AA appearance. Ojeda got off to a shaky start by allowing consecutive singles to lead off the first, and then threw away a pickoff attempt, allowing Phil Avlas to score from third. Ojeda walked in a run in the bottom of the third, which got him yanked.
May: 1-2, 3 BB, 1 K
Mitchell: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Denker, T: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Tomlin: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
De Jesus: 0-4, 1 K
Arias, M: 1.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 5.26 ERA
Pfeiffer: (L, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 14.54 ERA
Alvarez: 2.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 6.14 ERA
Lizarraga: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Mattingly: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Perez: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Bell: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Santana: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Melgarejo: (L, 0-2), 4.1 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 4.40 ERA
White, G: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 2.70 ERA
