Pickoff Moves
Wolf Packed: Diamondbacks 9, Dodgers 1
Really, I was hoping the score would turn out 9-0 so I could use the angle of the Dodgers just capitulating, as in the legal forfeit score. There was some discussion in yesterday's DT thread about whether the Diamondbacks are capable of taking the division; I would hope this game pretty neatly answered it.Arizona set a team record for stranded runners in a nine-inning game, with 25, loading the bases three times. Needless to say, this game did nothing to change my mind about the relative merits (or demerits) of the Dodgers' rotation. It also showed just how vulnerable the Dodgers are to taking Russell Martin out of the lineup. Traditionalists balking about allowing the pitcher to hit and other such silliness might well consider just what the Dodgers might have gotten out of their offense had they injected Martin into the six hole as a DH instead of having Mike Lieberthal and his 1-for-4 in the eight hole and Wilson Betemit and his 0-for-3 with a walk batting sixth.
Update: In fairness, I should note that the pitcher who made the Dodgers look silly for seven innings was recent Cy Young winner Brandon Webb, but then they also encountered less-than-Cy-Young pitchers Dana Eveland and Brandon Medders, and did nothing against them.
Roster Notes
- Mike Scioscia expects Garret Anderson back before the current Kansas City series is over.
- Howie Kendrick can operate a Sony PlayStation Portable, but hasn't been given clearance for baseball activities yet. He has been throwing and running but can't swing a bat or catch a ball because of the impact on his hand.
- Maicer Izturis was available for pinch-hitting or defensive duties last night.
- Hong-Chih Kuo and Yhency Brazoban will stay in AAA this week.
- Bobby Kielty hit the 15-day DL, thus further muddying the A's outfield situation. The A's called up Adam Melhuse to replace him on the 25-man roster.
- Eric Gagne hopes to return within a week after playing catch.
