Josh Hancock Under The Influence At Time Of Death
The sad story of Josh Hancock just got a little bit sadder as authorities determined he was under the influence when he hit a parked tow truck on I-64 outside St. Louis early last Sunday. I got an e-mail or two about this when the story initially broke, but I don't generally worry about news outside the division, and combined with the likelihood that there were other contributing factors, I wanted to withhold comment until the autopsy results were in.I certainly feel badly for his family; at the same time, I hope this won't result in overreaction in some quarters. I normally hate Ozzie Guillen, but for once he makes some sense:
"I was upset," Guillen said of the column. "Everyone has a responsibility, and they run the clubhouse the way they know how. With all respect, Billy Beane looks like a hero. But we banned alcohol when we were playing. I think it was Larry Himes."
"But in the meanwhile, I have a problem with one of my players because of that. And it was a couple years ago. I told him I don't want you to go out there drinking and feel that way."
"Most of the people [who] have family here should know when to do it and how to do it. Don't blame the clubhouse, don't blame baseball, don't blame Bud Selig, don't blame [Walt] Jocketty, don't blame Tony La Russa. Don't blame any of those guys. Just blame the people who don't have common sense or do stuff they're not supposed to do. This happened. Too bad. There have been a lot of people blamed because of that."
The (Almost) Perfect Wang, Or, Weaver's Last Stand: Yankees 8, Mariners 1
Jeff Weaver gave up only one run before imploding in the sixth while the Yankees' Chien-Ming Wang was perfect through seven, only allowing a solo homer to Ben Broussard in the eighth. Weaver claims to feel better these days:
"When it goes bad, it goes bad," Weaver said of the offensive discrepancy, "but this was a step in the right direction. I felt a lot better out there, not worrying about mechanics or arm angle. It was nice to get past the third inning and throw more than 100 pitches."

"I thought Weaver was awfully good today, I really did," Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said. "He threw strikes, and if he throws like that all year, we'll be all right and he will, too."

Carl Pavano will likely need Tommy John surgery. Phil Hughes is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to his hamstring injury. Quit fantasizing about A-Rod, guys; it's not happening.
