Pickoff Moves
How Embarrassing, Chone
I didn't see this in part because we were so low to the field, but apparently Chone Figgins' error was especially embarrassing:The mess was precipitated by a bizarre defensive gaffe by third baseman Chone Figgins that brought both managers out of their respective dugouts.I initially scored that E5, and to my surprise, next saw LaRoche at third. I had to turn to my Internet-enabled phone to get the official scoring, which was as puzzling as could be.Andy LaRoche's grounder nicked off Figgins' glove and rolled into foul territory. Figgins went to retrieve the ball but dropped it and it rolled into the photographers' well, prompting the umpires to award LaRoche third base on a play that was scored as a double and an error.
And then there's Santana's stuff:
"He was all over the place," Kent said of Santana. "The catcher would set up out, he would throw in. But he was missing on the good side. He was difficult to pattern."Said Scioscia: "His stuff tonight was a notch above anything we've seen in his last four or five starts. What we saw tonight just reaffirms that the stuff is there."
Roster Notes
- There's still no timetable for Garret Anderson's return, though he recently ran the bases and took batting practice.
- Howie Kendrick will continue his rehab assignment through Monday, at which time the team will evaluate him.
- Justin Speier is in Arizona with a viral syndrome. That opens the door to the possibility of a return to the Angels by Troy Percival, who made official yesterday his desire to return to the major leagues.
"He called me [Friday] morning and said, 'Let's go,' " said Paul Cohen, Percival's agent. "I just finished a 10-year matrix for his retirement plan. That's going into the paper shredder next week."
The Angels, however, are far from a given, since as he put it, "When it comes down to it, their bullpen is set. They don't need anybody." - Tim Hamulack had Tommy John surgery (I assume) on Thursday.
- Esteban Loaiza has been diagnosed with a torn knee miniscus. He has refused surgery, electing to continue his rehab assignment.
- Rich Harden's shoulder felt bad during long toss, and so is shut down again.
- Milton Bradley will return to the A's shortly, but will be limited to pinch hitting duties at first.
- Former Dodger prospect Edwin Jackson couldn't make it out of the third in his Friday night game against the Marlins. As Rotoworld recently put it, his time in the rotation may be coming to an end with the Devil Rays. He's 0-6 for the year with a 7.78 ERA.
- Hank Blalock, who's played in pain all season thus far, will have rib removal surgery and will miss up to three months.
- Tigers lefty Andrew Miller blanked the Cardinals on the way to a 14-4 victory, striking out two and walking three. The Angels will face him in the upcoming road series on May 24; something to consider.
