Robothal Notes

A couple items of interest from Ken Rosenthal's latest... regarding the Angels' pitching "surplus":
Talk about loaded. The Angels are second in the AL in rotation ERA. Righty Dustin Moseley is in the bullpen, lefty Joe Saunders is at Class AAA and righty Nick Adenhart — a top prospect who is not yet 21 — is 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA at Class AA.

But GM Bill Stoneman rarely trades young players, much less young pitchers — and righties Bartolo Colon and Kelvim Escobar hardly are locks to stay healthy. In fact, Colon left his start in the eighth inning Sunday with a strained right triceps, although his injury is not believed to be serious.

Moseley and Saunders combined for a 2.21 ERA in six fill-in starts earlier this season; either one could be packaged with say, infielder Erick Aybar, to bring the third baseman or outfielder the Angels need. Or, Stoneman could trade righty Ervin Santana, who is 21-5 with a 3.01 career ERA at home, 9-15 with a 6.66 ERA on the road.

Aybar is best at shortstop, and Orlando Cabrera is signed through next season. But how young do the Angels want to go? A future infield of Brandon Wood at third, Aybar at short, Howie Kendrick at second and Casey Kotchman at first is intriguing, but it would be even better if Alex Rodriguez were in the mix.

Help me, Vladdi, you're our only hope...
Angels right fielder Vladimir Guerrero continues to drive advance scouts, well, batty: "Same old Vladdy; if he can reach it, he can kill it," one says. "He's so stinkin' hard to pitch to. You've got to be nuts to throw him strikes. The least you can do is give him something out of the zone."
Miller Time for the Dodgers?
Dodgers Class AAA left-hander Greg Miller, one of the game's top prospects before undergoing two shoulder operations, is again drawing raves from scouts with his 97-mph fastball and wicked slider. If Miller gains command of his slider, he can be a No. 2 starter, one scout says; if not, he can be a front-line closer.
He did not look good in his last start...
